LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 21 West Texas A&M women's track & field team repeated as Lone Star Conference Indoor Track & Field Champions on Sunday, earning their second-straight and second overall conference trophy inside the Athletic Training Center ("The Bubble") on the campus of Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Additionally, the No. 23 Buffs raced to a second-place team finish while WT's men and women combined to earn 11 team/event conference titles on the weekend.
The Buffs finished second overall in the championship with 207 points. They trailed Texas A&M-Commerce who took home the hardware on the men's side with 245 points. Finishing third was Texas A&M-Kingsville (124 pts.), followed by Harding (fourth, 50 pts.), Eastern New Mexico (fifth, 17 pts.), and Tarleton State (sixth, five pts.). TSU would only score team points from participation in multi events, while the team was unable to make the trip due to inclement weather. Harding would also miss a number of opening events on Saturday as they arrived late due to the weather as well.
"Our guys put in a great hard fought effort but Commerce just had more this weekend," noted head coach
Darren Flowers. "I feel like we did just about everything we could to be successful at this meet."
The Lady Buffs dominated from the start of the weekend as they rolled to a second-straight title with 209.5 points. They were followed by Angelo State (second, 159 pts.), TAMUK (third, 102 pts.), ENMU (fourth, 59.5 pts.), TAMUC (fifth, 49 pts.), Harding (sixth, 47 pts.), Midwestern State (seventh, 24 pts.), and TSU (eighth, five points).
"This group of girls really deserves this championship," continued Flowers. "They are great people with great character and I am excited to see them bring home the trophy again."
The women finished with six individual LSC Champions this weekend. They were led by sophomore
Holly Cunigan who swept the medals in the shot put and weight throw competitions and sophomore
Malika Ouedraogo who swept the long jump and triple jump events. Junior
Libby Strickland would win in high jump while senior
Sharon Kwarula would grab the lone title on the track for the Lady Buffs in the 55m hurdles.
For the men, senior
Tommy Curry finished atop the podium in both the 55m and 200m races.
Lorenzo Johnson (55mH) and
Baptiste Moreu (3000m) would also win their events on the track while WT's DMR team also placed first.
Overall during the LSC Championship, WT broke 10 school records, two LSC records, and six LSC Championship records. Sixteen new or improved provisional marks/times were recorded as well.
LADY BUFFS 
Strickland would finish as the leading scorer for the Lady Buffs, contributing 27 points, second overall in the women's field.
Though recording points with multiple scorers in each track final, the Lady Buffs' heavy hitters were in the field on Sunday. WT would win three of the four field events as Strickland (HJ), Cunigan (SP), and Ouedraogo (TJ) each earned first place. Also reaching the podium in third was
Marion Gatignol in the triple jump. Cunigan's 15.15m mark in the shot put competition would break her own school and LSC record for the fourth time this season, as well as write in a new LSC Championship record.
Grabbing another victory on the track was senior
Sharon Kwarula who won the 55m hurdles race with a time of 7.87, breaking her own school and LSC record, as well as an LSC Championship record and increasing her provisional qualifier.
Alba Casanovas would also have a podium finish in the event by finishing third. Kwarula also ended up earning another provisional time with a fourth place finish in the 400m finals.
Junior
Shanice Cameron earned two third-place medals in each the 55m and 200m finals while junior
Mireia Guarner finished third as well in both the mile and 3000m events.
"We recognize now that winning is what is expected out of this program and I am very grateful to the current student-athletes and alumni that have made that possible," added Flowers.
BUFFS Curry would highlight the day for the men as he picked up two individual titles, winning both the 55m and 200m events. He would set school records in both events while earning an increased provisional qualifier in the 200m, running a time of 21.27. He led the Buffs individually, putting up the third most points of all male competitors with 22. Curry was followed in the 200m by
Jerell Banks in second place. Also scoring in the 55m was
Lorenzo Johnson (third) and Banks (seventh).

Johnson would earn an individual championship of his own as he rolled to a first place finish in the 55m hurdles, setting a new school, LSC, and LSC Championship meet record time of 7.27. Senior
Arnau Erta followed behind in third place with a provisional time. Senior
Josh Helom also had a big day on the track with a second place finish in the 400m finals as he broke his own school record, increasing a provisional time, at 48.13.
In distance events, Moreu would cross the line first for the Buffs in the 3000m as he was crowned an LSC Champion, finishing with a time of 8:42.28*. Freshman
Geoffrey Kipchumba and junior
Michael Schaefer also earned medals on the track with second and third place finishes in the mile and 800m finals, respectively.
To finish all events was the men's 4x400m relay. The Buffs ended up in third behind TAMUC, crossing the line with an increased provisional time of 3:15.58. That team consisted of Curry, Helom,
Damien Bourguin and
Trevor Greenfield.
Wrapping up the Buffs' day in the field were second-place finishes by
Zach Weatherly in shot put and
Benoit Nadin in triple jump. Nadin's performance would come off a 14.94m jump which would break his own school record in the event, and largely increase his provisional distance.
SATURDAY (DAY 1) RECAP
After day one of the meet, both the Lady Buffs and Buffs found themselves in good positions heading into the final day with a chance to repeat. The women held a strong lead overall in the standings while the men sat in third; however, had many athletes qualified for final heats on Sunday with chances to climb back up in the race.
Overall, WT earned three LSC individual or event championships on Saturday. For the women, sophomores
Holly Cunigan and
Malika Ouedraogo topped the podium in their respective events while the men's DMR team closed out the first day with a team title.
Additionally, three school records were broken, as well as three LSC Championship event records. The Buffs and Lady Buffs also combined to record nine new or improved provisional qualifying marks/times.
LADY BUFFS The Lady Buffs owned day one on the women's side of the competition. Beginning the day was the women's pentathlon which saw five-time All-American
Libby Strickland finish second, setting a provisional qualifying score of 3,638 points. Also scoring in the event was
Sarah Climer (fourth) and
Morgan Seawright (sixth).
Regular field events would begin with Cunigan grabbing the weight throw title after tossing for 15.26m. Ouedraogo would then earn the team's second individual championship with a 5.55m mark in the long jump competition. WT would rack up 22 points in that event as the Lady Buffs would also finish 4-6.
In track event finals, the Lady Buffs would get a second finish in the 5000m race from
Emma Love. Then the women's DMR finished the night in second place, setting a new school record and provisional time of 12:01.79*. That team consisted of
Brittany Mitchell,
Rhemecka Graham,
Kaitlin Rodriguez, and
Mireia Guarner.
BUFFS 
The first track event to hold finals on day one was the 5000m race. For the men, junior
Zach Daniel would score to reach the podium in second place with a time of 15:28.51*. Additionally on the track, the men's DMR team finished the day as LSC champs with a time of 10:22.64*, setting a new LSC Championship record. That group consisted of
Junior Baca,
Trevor Greenfield,
Brandon Rivera, and
Geoffrey Kipchumba.
In jumps, senior
Kemarki Absalom recorded points in two events, placing sixth in high jump before earning a second place finish in long jump, increasing his provisional mark to 7.32m. Junior
Paul Alongo (second) would tally points in long jump.
Also in field events was the men's weight throw competition, one where the Buffs tallied 11 points by scoring three athletes.
Zach Weatherly led the way in third place with a mark of 16.56m.
WT will return to action in two weeks as qualifying individuals travel to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship. The event will take place on March 13-14. LSC awards will be released by Wednesday this week while selections will be made by the NCAA for the championship in the days to follow. Check back with

SCORING: In the championships meet regardless of the number of teams, official team scores kept and recorded as follows: (8 scoring) Individual Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, Relay Events: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
MEDALS: Individual medals awarded in first, second and third places for each event conducted at the LSC Championships Meet, including medals to each member of teams placing in the Distance Medley and 1,600-meter relays.
ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM: The team shall consist of the winner in each event, including all members of the winning relay teams, and any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the Conference Championships Meet. Individual awards shall include Outstanding Male and Female Track Athlete, Outstanding Male and Female Field Athlete and Coach of the Year for both men and women. Voting for individual awards shall be conducted through an online nomination process (submit nominations by Noon the Tuesday after the LSC meet; Ballots distributed via email by Tuesday evening and voting deadline by Noon that Wednesday to ensure Wednesday afternoon release).
