Hall of Champions
Smith was elected captain in 1952 and was named a Grantland Rice All-America selection in 1952. He was a two-way starter and a member of the 1950 Border Conference Championship team and the 1951 Sun Bowl team.
He earned the prestigious honor of being named a “Who's Who among Students in American College and Universities.” Smith elected to go to Naval Officer's Candidate School, rather than pursue a professional football career. Commissioned a Lieutenant JG and served on the destroyer USS Marshal.
He served two tours, one in the China Sea and the other in the Bay of Tonkin during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
