San Antonio, Texas - West Texas A&M's Jeniffer Cherono (junior, Iten, Kenya) finished fifth at the NCAA Division II South Central Championships, contested Saturday morning over the 6 kilometer Live Oak City Park in San Antonio, Texas.

That performance qualifies her for the NCAA Division II National Championships, to be held in two weeks.

Cherono led the Lady Buffs' with a time of 21.37, 50 seconds better than her previous best time at the distance. She was followed by Krista Hartsfield (junior, Perryton, Texas), who finished 36th with a time of 23:11 and Allie Reyna (freshman, Ralls, Texas), 55th with a time of 23.53, Belinda Castanon (senior, El Paso, Texas) was 63rd overall (24:13), Becca Rapstine (sophomore, White Deer, Texas), placed 97th (25:23) and Tara Shields (freshman, Spearman, Texas) finished 113th with a time of 27:25 in the 130-entrant field.

As a team, the Lady Buffs placed eighth, totaling 256 points, while favorite Missouri Southern captured the regional team title, scoring 88 points to place ahead of Midwestern State (94 point) and Pittsburg State. The top three teams qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Abilene Christian's Winrose Karunde placed first, individually, with a time of 20:45.6, Missouri Southern's Kimi Shank placed second with a time of 20:53.3 and ACU's Loice Chebol was third in 21:21.4. The top 10 individuals advance to the NCAA meet.


 

 

Cherono's next competition will be the NCAA Division II National Championships, to be contested Nov. 22, in Slippery Rock, Pa.
