Oct. 25, 2008
Kingsville, Texas - The West Texas A&M women's cross country team placed second at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships, held Saturday morning at the L.S. Ramey Golf Course in Kingsville, Texas. Jeniffer Cherono (junior, Iten, Kenya), was the top Lady Buff finisher, placing third over the 6k course with a time of 22:21. Midwestern State University placed five runners in the top 20 and won the LSC women's cross country championship by 26 points over West Texas A&M. MSU was led by top 10 finishers Katie Stepp (4th, 22:35), Lindsey Pate (7th, 23:13) and Kayla Hendrix (10th, 23:36). Andrea Borgman, 17th, and Brittany Barrington, 20th, closed out the Mustangs' team scoring giving them a total of 58 points. The Lady Buffs narrowly held off East Central University for second place, 84-94. Central Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and Angelo State rounded out the top six teams. Southwestern Oklahoma, Tarleton State, Eastern New Mexico, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Southeastern Oklahoma finished in seventh through 12th place, respectively. Following Cherono for the Lady Buffs were Kristie Hartsfield (junior, Perryton, Texas), 11th with a time of 23:50, followed by Belinda Castanon (senior, El Paso, Texas), 18th, 24:16, Allie Reyna (freshman, Ralls, Texas), 24th with a time of 24:47, and Becca Rapstine (sophomore, White Deer, Texas), 28th with a 25:13. Also running but not scoring was Tara Shields (freshman, Spearman, Texas), who placed 51st with a time of 27:06. "We ran really well as a team," said head coach Kimberly Dudley. "We stepped up and competed and just ran very competitively. "This was the first time for Allie Reyna to compete, as she's been out with a stress fracture," Dudley continued. "She just ran on guts and really contributed to our team scoring." The Lady Buffs next competition will be Nov. 8, when they compete in the NCAA South Central Regional Meet, hosted by Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. The six kilometer event will begin at 10:30 a.m. CST.
