Buffs Open Cross Country Season

The West Texas A&M Cross Country teams took the the course for their season opener at home this evening, playing host to six other teams from around the area.
The seven team meet included overall men's and women's winner Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico, McMurry, New Mexico Junior college, New Mexico Highlands and Oklahoma Panhandle University.
The top runners of the afternoon were New Mexico Highlands' Gina Ortiz for the women, with a time of 21:14 over three kilometres, and Nimrod Kipteu from Wayland Baptist who finished 22 seconds ahead of his closest follower in 21:39 over four miles.
Buffs runners showed well in their first outing, placing third in the women's event and fifth in the men's. Freshman Jisel Bailon was first across the finish line for the Lady Buffs, finishing sixth overall with a time of 21:41 for the three kilometre race. The men were led by senior Lito Belmonetes who placed 22nd overall, finishing in 23:50.
The Buffs continue their season next Friday, September 10th at Abilene Christian. The women's race begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men at 6:30 p.m.
