Lady Buff Volleyball Opens Spring Season Saturday
March 26, 2004
The West Texas A&M University volleyball team opens its spring season this weekend, traveling to Denton, Texas, on Saturday, March 27, to compete in a tournament hosted by Texas Woman's University.
The Lady Buffs will face Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M University-Commerce, as well as Midland Junior College and Cedar Valley Junior College at the TWU Tournament.
Following this weekend, WTAMU will compete in three other tournaments, including hosting a tournament on April 3 at The Box. The Lady Buffs will compete in a Cameron University tournament on April 10 at Lawton, Okla., and in a University of Texas-Arlington tourney on April 17.
"Everyone is very excited about starting the spring tournament schedule," WTAMU head coach Tony Graystone said. "The team looks good right now and has already made a lot of progress since the end of last season. I'm anxious to see how much more we will improve with some live competition. I've been very pleased with our work ethic, team chemistry and overall commitment."
According to Graystone, several individuals have made improvements this off-season.
"In particular, Cynthia Carter, Megan Spivey, Rachel Altman and Jessica Scherr have been very impressive," Graystone said. "Libby Garza and Brittani Bell have taken over for All-Americans Kendra Morgan and Kacie Hyatt, and are having terrific off-seasons. Spring semester transfer Courtney Barnes has also looked extremely good and will definitely help us at outside hitter. The team is overall in very good health, with the exception of Ambra Clark, who is still battling stress fractures in her lower legs and may be another a week or two away from being released."
The Lady Buffs ended the season 29-8, winning their seventh-straight LSC South crown and captured its fifth LSC Championship in a row. WTAMU made its 10th-straight appearance in the NCAA-II Tournament, where the Lady Buffs lost to Rockhurst in the NCAA-II Southwest Regional quarterfinals.
