Lady Buffs Advance To LSC Title Tilt After Sweeping Texas Woman's Friday
Nov. 14, 2003
The West Texas A&M University volleyball team will go after its fifth-straight Lone Star Conference Championship and sixth in seven years, after advancing to the title match by sweeping Texas Woman's, 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-23) Friday at The Box.
The Lady Buffs, the No. 1 seed out of the LSC-South, will meet Central Oklahoma, the No. 1 seed out of the LSC-North, in the championship on Saturday at 7 p.m. WTAMU has played in the LSC Tournament the last seven years. The Lady Buffs won the title in 1997, before losing to Cameron in 1998, then reeled off the next four championships, leading to this year's showdown with UCO.
The Bronchos knocked off North rival Cameron, 3-1 (30-24, 24-30, 30-23, 30-23).
Friday night to reach Saturday's title tilt.
WTAMU was led by freshman middle blocker Megan Spivey's match-highs 15 kills and five blocks. Fellow freshmen, outside hitters Ambra Clark and Rachel Altman had 11 kills apiece for WTAMU, who improve to 28-7 overall on the year.
Sophomore defensive specialist Brittani Bell posted a match-high 15 digs.
Senior setter Kendra Morgan dished out a match-high 45 assists, giving her 5,988 assists. Morgan needs 12 assists to become just the 12th player in NCAA-II history with 6,000 assists. She already is the LSC career assists leader and moved into the NCAA-II Top 10 career assists list. Morgan joins her sister, Holly Morgan, in the NCAA-II record book. Holly, a Lady Buff from 1995-'98, is in the Top 20 for digs per game, and was in attendance Friday night, as well as several other former Lady Buff players from previous title teams to root on this year's edition's drive for five-straight LSC titles.
TWU was led by Jenny Madrid's 13 kills, while Marci Brinkman added 11 kills. Courtney Lewis tallied a team-high 13 digs and Carly Messmer had 39 assists for the Pioneers, whose season ends at 16-19. TWU opened the season 2-15 before going on a winning frenzy, reeling off 12-straight wins, including eight LSC North matches, ending the regular-season as the North's No. 2 seed.
This will be the second meeting this season between UCO and WTAMU, as they met on Sept. 26 at the LSC Crossover Tournament at Wichita Falls, Texas. The Lady Buffs swept the Bronchos, 3-0, behind 13 kills from Clark, 12 from Spivey and 11 from Altman. WTAMU leads the all-time series, 27-4, including last year's four-game win on the Bronchos' home floor for the LSC Title. This will be the sixth LSC Tournament meeting between UCO and WTAMU, as the Lady Buffs hold a 4-1 advantage, but only the second time that they have played for the championship.
