CANYON, Texas – The #5-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs dropped the second set against Wayland Baptist, but closed out the last two sets to come up with the win with scores of 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, and 25-19. The win lifts WT to 30-3 this season, with a 12-0 LSC record entering the final game of the regular season.

WT ran away with the first set, holding WBU to only 15 points and a hitting percentage of .071. The second set saw a score of 21-25 in favor of WBU, but the Lady Buffs fought back in the last two sets with high hitting percentages to close out the match with scores of 25-21, and 25-19.

The Lady Buffs’ defense was strong as Lauren Beville (Fr., L, Hereford, Texas) turned in one of her best performances of the season with 25 digs, followed by Lauren Theford (Jr., DS, Carrollton, Texas) with 11 digs. Beville and Thedford each contributed a service ace as well.

WT put up 11 team blocks, led by Lauren Purdy (So., MB, Arlington, Texas) with six block assists and a solo block. Laura Prinsen (Sr., RS, Spring, Texas) tallied four block assists, and Melissa Harper (Sr., MB, Peoria, Ariz.) put up two block assists and a solo block.


 

 

Offensively, Prinsen and Harper produced double-digit kills with 18 and 16, respectively. Harper also recorded a match-high hitting percentage of .536. Purdy was strong offensively as well with nine kills, followed by Natalie Johnson (Sr., OH, Cortez, Colo.) with eight kills. Katie Rickwartz (Sr., S, Canyon, Texas) led the team to a .316 hitting percentage and recorded 58 assists, eight digs, a service ace, and a block assist.

The Lady Buffs finish the regular season tomorrow, facing Eastern New Mexico in The Box in Canyon, Texas, at 7:00 p.m. A win against the Zias will seal first place in the LSC standings and give WT the host for the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament, set to take place on Nov. 12-14.
