Lady Buffs Win Seventh-Straight LSC South Title With Four-Game Win Over Angelo State Saturday
Nov. 1, 2003
The West Texas A&M University volleyball team won its seventh-straight Lone Star Conference South Division title with a 3-1 (21-30, 30-22, 30-20, 30-24) victory over Angelo State University Saturday at The Box.
With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to 26-7 overall, 9-1 in the LSC South, and atop the South Division standings for the seventh-consecutive year.
WTAMU will host the LSC Tournament Nov. 13-15 at The Box.
The win also exerted revenge for the Lady Buffs' five-game loss to the Rambelles on Oct. 10 at San Angelo, Texas, snapping WTAMU's NCAA-II record for consecutive victories vs. conference opponents at 77-straight. The loss also stopped the Lady Buffs' 19-match win streak in the all-time series. However, Saturday's win improved the Lady Buffs to 34-12 all-time vs. the Rambelles.
Senior libero Kacie Hyatt became WTAMU's single-season digs leader, as she now has 582 digs this season, passing Rachel Williams' 573 digs in 1995.
The Lady Buffs controlled the action at the net, as they posted a season-high 18.5 team blocks, led by senior setter Kendra Morgan's career-high eight blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Ambra Clark tied a match-high with 14 kills (.324 hitting percentage) and fellow freshmen, middle blocker Megan Spivey and outside hitter Rachel Altman added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Spivey added seven blocks and Altman, along with sophomore middle blocker Cynthia Carter had five blocks apiece.
Saturday, the Rambelles charged to a 16-9 lead, and the Lady Buffs couldn't get any closer six points the rest of the way, as ASU won a game in The Box for the first time since 1994, a span of nine matches. The Belles hit .368 in the opening game, compared to .190 for the Lady Buffs.
WTAMU stepped up their defense, as they opened a 18-9 lead after a block from Altman. ASU closed to 22-17, on a kill from Lindsey Jones, one of four Belles with double-digit kills for the match.
However, the Lady Buffs regained control and won game two, 30-22 after Spivey teamed with freshman outside hitter Lindsey Schaal for a block.
Schaal came off the bench to spark WTAMU's effort, and finished with seven kills and four blocks.
The Lady Buffs stormed to an 11-3 lead in the third game after a kill by Schaal, and opened a 16-6 lead, twice, as a replay was ordered after the first time.
Another kill from Schaal put WTAMU up 23-11, and the Lady Buffs cruised to victory in game three, winning 30-20 on a kill by Spivey.
In game four, WTAMU led 15-14, before reeling off three-straight points to go up 18-14, capped by a tandem block by Morgan and Spivey.
The Lady Buffs opened a 24-19 lead and went on to win the game 30-24 after an errant Rambelle attack, setting off WTAMU's celebration in its regular-season home finale.
Next on the schedule for WTAMU is a trip to Las Vegas, N.M., to take on New Mexico Highlands on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. Central Time.
