Oct. 23, 2004
The West Texas A&M University volleyball team brought their "A" game to face Lone Star Conference South division leader Abilene Christian University on seniors's day at The Box Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats defeated the Lady Buffs 3-0.
The Lady Buffs made a game of it, matching the Wildcats point for point until the final rallies of each game. WTAMU dropped this match, 30-28, 30-26, 37-35. This was the first time that WTAMU has been swept in The Box since Texas Wesleyan, 2-0, in 1987 when the matches were still best of three.
WTAMU put up good numbers today but they just weren't enough to toppel ACU. WTAMU recorded a combined 49 kills, a .203 attacking percentage and only made 19 hitting erros, while ACU tallied 64 kills, a .239 attacking percentage but recorded 25 hitting errors. The Lady Buffs also posted 59 digs, four service aces and 46 assists to the Wildcat's 66 digs, six service aces and 59 assists.
The Lady Buffs' strong performance provided them with three attackers recording double-digit kills and were led by the match-high 17 that senior outside hitter Jill Steininger put on the board. In her final home match as a Lady Buff, Steininger recorded 17 kills on 41 attacks, a .220 attack percentage, and three digs.
Sophomores Megan Spivey (middle blocker) and Jessica Scherr (outside hitter) both posted a 10 kill match, while classmate outside hitter Rachel Altman chipped in with eight kills and a WTAMU match-high .280 attack percentage.
Freshman setter Erin Houlihan had another solid day as she dished out 44 assists and recorded seven digs. Junior libero Brittani Bell led the team on defensive with a match-high 17 digs.
ACU's offensive attack was led by Abbie Lowry who posted 13 kills, a .323 attack percentage and one block. Ashlee Motola posted match-highs, 17 kills and .353 attacking percentage.
The Lady Buffs now move to 17-12 on the season and 2-5 in LSC South action. The Lady Buffs will now have take their efforts on the road for the remainder of the season in their attempt to make it to post-season action.
WTAMU will travel to Portales, N.M. on Tuesday Oct. 26 to face Eastern New Mexico, who is rising in the LSC South standings. The first serve is scheduled for 8 p.m. central time.
