Lady Buffs Sweep Bronchos to Sit Alone Atop the LSC Standings
Oct. 18, 2007
CANYON, Texas - Sophomore setter Katie Rickwartz dished out 43 assists and added 10 digs as the No 16 Lady Buff volleyball team remained in control of the Lone Star Conference Thursday night by sweeping Central Oklahoma (30-21, 30-19 and 30-18) in front of 1,158 fans at "The Box." With the victory, the Lady Buffs improve to 23-7 overall and remain unbeaten in LSC play at 8-0, while Central Oklahoma, whose overall record now stands at 23-5, suffers its first league loss of the season and falls to 6-1 in the league standings. During the match's first game, the Lady Buffs fell behind 6-2 early and had to scratch and claw their way back into the game. Final after tying the match at 16-16, WTAMU assumed control and won 14 of the next 19 points to take the early lead. Unlike the first game, the Lady Buffs did not struggle out of the gate in the final two games and they prevented UCO from reaching 20 points in either of the match's final two stanzas. The Lady Buffs' defense was impressive on the night as they collected 12 team blocks and limited the Bronchos to a frustrating .041 team hitting percentage. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Harper, who also contributed 10 kills, led the team with eight total blocks, while libero Sara Contreras paced the team with 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Laura Prinsen was again impressive offensively, posting 16 kills to edge teammate Natalie Johnson, who collected 15, for the game high in that category. The Lady Buffs are back in action at "The Box" on Saturday as they host Southwestern Oklahoma State in a 2 p.m. contest.
