The West Texas A&M University volleyball team extended its home winning streak to 38-straight with a pair of sweeps over Oklahoma Panhandle State and St. Mary's Friday in the Lady Buff Challenge at The Box.

The Lady Buffs dominated Okla. Panhandle State, 30-55, 30-17, 30-21. WTAMU did not allow an OPSU kill until the score was, 3-2 in WTAMU's favor in game two. Freshman middle blocker Megan Spivey led the Lady Buff arsenal with 10 kills on .474 hitting percentage. Fellow freshman, outside hitter Lindsey Schaal added nine and sophomore outside hitter Collanne Bramblett chipped in with eight kills (.455 hitting percentage).

Sophomore setter Libby Garza dished out 24 assists and fellow sophomore, defensive specialist Brittani Bell tallied 11 digs.

WTAMU recorded 10 service aces in winning game two, 30-17. Junior setter Katie Starkweather and Schaal each logged four aces. The Lady Buffs registered a season-high 13 aces in the match.

OPSU was limited to -.140 hitting percentage for the match, including -.435 in the first game. The Lady Aggies, in their first year as a competitive volleyball team ended the day 0-7 on the year, and have been swept in every match played.

Saturday's marquee match-up was the final match of the day, pitting WTAMU vs. St. Mary's, in a rematch of the Rattlers' four-game victory over the Lady Buffs back on Sept. 12 at the Alamo Classic Tournament on STMU's home court at San Antonio, Texas.

The first game was back-and-forth, and knotted at 24-24, before freshman outside hitter Jessica Scherr and Spivey combined to score the next three WTAMU points. After a kill from Scherr, then the two teamed up for a block, then Spivey followed with a kill to put the Lady Buffs up 27-24, the Rattlers were forced to take a time-out.

 

 

St. Mary's came out of the time-out with a point, but then had two unforced errors, and Scherr followed with a kill to give WTAMU the 30-25 game one victory.

After the Lady Buffs jumped out an 11-5 lead after a kill from senior setter Kendra Morgan, St. Mary's again called time-out, but it didn't stop the WTAMU momentum, as Morgan had a quick-set for a kill and the Rattlers hit the ball into the net to make the score 17-9.

The Rattlers closed to 20-17, but the Lady Buffs regained control with a smoking kill from Scherr.

WTAMU expanded the lead to 26-19 after two-straight kills from sophomore middle blocker Cynthia Carter and force another St. Mary's timeout.

The Lady Buffs went on to win game two, 30-21, after the Rattlers' served the ball into the net to end the game.

WTAMU jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third stanza, Clark pounded a kill into the middle of the Rattler defense.

The Lady Buffs went up 11-3 after an STMU kill attempt sailed deep and not playable, scattering the WTAMU cheerleaders.

St. Mary's closed to 13-9, before freshman outside hitter Rachel Altman tallied two kills, giving a Rattler player a facial on one, to put WTAMU on top 15-10.

The Lady Buffs opened the lead to 20-12 after two kills from Clark.

Morgan put the Lady Buffs up 28-17 after she outmuscled the Rattlers' Misti Fischnar for a kill, then Spivey logged a kill and Scherr ended the game and the match at 30-17 with a kill.

Clark pounded a match-high 13 kills, while Scherr tallied 11 kills and Spivey registered 10 kills (.526 hitting percentage) to lead the Lady Buffs' attack.

Morgan finished with 38 assists, 12 digs and eight kills, two kills short of her fifth triple-double of the year.

Senior libero Kacie Hyatt logged a match-high 16 digs.

The Lady Buffs improve to 20-6 on the year and continue Lady Buff Challenge action Saturday at 4 p.m., taking on Bellarmine at The Box.
