WTAMU's Woes Continue
Oct. 16, 2004
The West Texas A&M University volleyball team's struggles continue as Texas A&M University Kingsville defeated the Lady Buffs, 3-1, Saturday afternoon. This was the second of three home matches that WTAMU lost this week.
Errors were abundant in the match as there was a combined 22 service errors and 55 attacking errors. However in the end, it was the Javelinas who committed less errors, and won the match.
WTAMU hit a combined .182 attack percentage, while TAMU-K hit .214. The Javelinas were led by Shaday Smith who had a match-high 26 kills, while hitting .431 for the match.
The Lady Buffs had four players hitting in double-digits, with sophomore outside hitter Jessica Scherr leading the pack. Scherr had a team-high 16 kills and hit .222 for the match, but the most efficient player in today's match was junior middle blocker Cynthia Carter who had 15 kills and hit an impressive .464 on the day. Four players also chipped in with double-digit digs with junior libero Brittani Bell leading the way with a match-high 26.
TAMU-K came out sharp in game one taking an early 6-1 lead. WTAMU fought back pulling within two points at 23-21 but couldn't finish the deal as the Javelinas took the game, 30-25.
Game two seemed like a different match with the Lady Buffs leading for most of the game, but just were not being able to sustain the lead as TAMU-K came back to tie it at 26-26, and scored the final four points to end the game.
The fans did see a different Lady Buff squad in game three as WTAMU hit .217, forcing the Javelinas to make mistakes keeping them to a minimal .044 hitting percent.
Unfortunatley the Lady Buffs couldn't build on game three's result and dropped the final game 30-25.
This is the first time TAMU-K has defeated the Lady Buffs since 1986, snapping a 32-match winning streak.
WTAMU is now 16-11 on the year and 1-4 in Lone Star Confercence South action. The Lady Buffs continue LSC play next week as they will host the top two LSC South teams, opening with Angelo State University on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. and Abilene Christian University on Saturday, Oct.23 at 2 p.m. at "The Box".
