The West Texas A&M University volleyball team improved to 22-0 all-time vs. the Tarleton State University, as the Lady Buffs swept the Texanns, 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-18), Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference South Division match at the WTAMU Event Center in the opening festivities of Midnight Madness.

The Lady Buffs improved to 16-10 overall, wining five of their last six matches. Most importantly, WTAMU got off a division losing snide, recording its first LSC South victory, moving to 1-3 in the division standings. TSU dropped its fourth-straight division match, falling to 0-4 in LSC South play and 13-11 overall.

WTAMU hit .222 on the night, including a whopping .524 in game three, while the Lady Buff defense limited TSU to just .023, including -.036 in game two.

Junior middle blocker Cynthia Carter posted 11 kills on an eye-popping .435 attack percentage, with just one error, and recorded five blocks (two solo), leading WTAMU to an 8-5 team block advantage.

Senior outside hitter Jill Steininger also tallied 11 kills and added three blocks.

Freshman setter Erin Houlihan dished out a match-high 40 assists and sophomore outside hitter Jessica Scherr logged a match-high 16 digs, leading four Lady Buffs in double-digit digs.

TSU was led by 11 kills and four service aces from Missy Davis, who came into the match leading the LSC in aces and now has 67 on the year.

The match opened tight as neither team could pull away, until WTAMU charged ahead, 21-17, on an ace from Bell, forcing a TSU timeout. The lead increased to 26-18 after a tandem block from Carter and Steininger, followed by a Carter kill, prompting another Texann timeout. Steininger stormed out of the short break with consecutive kills and the Lady Buffs coasted to a 30-20 game one win.

WTAMU opened a 13-7 lead after a kill by sophomore middle blocker Megan Spivey and never looked back. Carter had a solo block to open a 20-12 lead before TSU closed to 23-21 after three aces from Davis, forcing a Lady Buff timeout. The break broke Davis' rhythm, as she promptly deposited the next serve into the net. Houlihan and Spivey teamed up for a block to give WTAMU a 25-21 lead and Carter ended the game by smashing a quick set from Houlihan to end game two at 30-23.

TSU was late returning to the floor from intermission and Carter rudely welcomed them back with consecutive kills.

Scherr pounded a kill to give WTAMU a 20-13 lead and Spivey later posted a kill to open the Lady Buff advantage to 26-16. Carter ended the game and the match with a kill at 30-18.
