The West Texas A&M University volleyball team swept both its matches in Friday's action of the BritKare Lady Buff Challenge at The Box, sweeping I-27 foe Wayland Baptist University Friday afternoon before capping the day with a thrilling sweep over regional opponent St. Mary's University.

The Lady Buffs swept WBU in rousing fashion, 30-14, 30-25, 30-18, as senior Jill Steininger led a trio of WTAMU attackers in double-digit kills, pounding out a match-high 14 kills, followed by sophomore outside hitters Rachel Altman and Jessica Scherr with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Freshman setter Erin Houlihan dished out a match-high 49 assists, while junior libero Brittani Bell tallied a match-high 20 digs.

WTAMU hit .388 for the match, including .485 in game one, led by Steininger's .500 attack percentage, followed by .417 from Scherr and .414 from Altman. WBU hit .090, including -.062 in the first game.

The Pioneers were led by 11 kills from Mary Grace Moore.

The St. Mary's match was tight from the outset, as WTAMU prevailed, 30-24, 30-28, 36-34.

In game three, the Rattlers fought off six match-points by the Lady Buffs, before finally conceding at 36-34.

The WTAMU attack was well balanced as Altman, Scherr and sophomore middle blocker Megan Spivey all tallied nine kills apiece, while Steininger and junior middle blocker Cynthia Carter added seven kills each.

Houlihan doled out a match-high 44 assists and Bell recorded a match-high 21 digs.

St. Mary's was led by 16 kills from Maegan Lowry and 12 kills from Lindsey Van Horn..

 

 

With the pair of wins, WTAMU improves to 13-9 overall.

The BritKare Lady Buff Challenge continues Saturday, with action shifting to the WTAMU Event Center. Action begins at 11 a.m. with St. Mary's taking on Texas A&M-Commerce, followed by WTAMU vs. Oklahoma Panhandle State at 1 p.m. and then WTAMU wraps up the Challenge against Texas A&M-Commerce at 5 p.m.
