CANYON, Texas – Audrey Wallace’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning lifted West Texas A&M to a 10-2 victory over Incarnate Word and a sweep of a doubleheader, Thursday afternoon at Lady Buff Yard.

Chantel Pearson (4-0) went the distance for WTAMU, scattering eight hits and allowing just two runs. Lea Padilla (8-16) took the loss for UIW.

The win improves WTAMU to 30-17 overall, while UIW drops to 20-27 overall.

As they did in the first game, the Lady Buffs jumped to 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kasey Henderson provided the early spark with an RBI double to left-center, driving home Amber Farr, who had led off the game with a single up the middle. Three batters later, Kaitlyn Witte hit a one-out RBI double to center, driving home Dani Couger. That was followed by Kristina Myles’ doubling home Witter.

The Cardinals got one run back in the top of the second on Chelsea Muskopf’s RBI single to left field.

WT plated a solo run in their half of the second as Audrey Wallace’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Meghan Brown.

The Lady Buffs put the game away in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 2 runs on three hits. With one out, Witte singled to center. Whitney Midkiff came on to pinch run and, after Myles popped up to second base, Wallace delivered her two-run shot over the left field fence to put WT ahead, 10-1. The Cardinals managed one run in the top of the fifth, but Pearson retired the side without any further damage.

“Our offense continued to do what our offense does,” said WT head coach Kevin Blaskowski. “And that's hit the ball and score runs.

“Chantel (Pearson) did a great job in the circle, also. She gave us a very strong pitching performance. And I'm so happy for Audrey (Wallace). She has struggled this year and it is great to see her come through with a huge home run like she did today. For her to get a game-winner should really boost her confidence.”

Offensive heroes for WT included Farr, who went 2-for-2 with a RBI and one run scored, LeComte was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Witte was 3-for-3 with a RBI and one run scored and Wallace, who had the two-run homer as well as a sacrifice fly for a total of three RBIs.

The Lady Buffs look to continue their winning ways, Friday, April 10, when they host LSC-South member Eastern New Mexico in a double-header. The first game is set to get underway at 1 p.m. CDT.
