CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M jumped to a seven-run first-inning lead and went on to defeat Incarnate Word, 17-9, Thursday afternoon at Lady Buff Yard. The game was delayed 90 minutes in the bottom of the first inning due to high winds in the Canyon area.

The win improves WTAMU to 29-17 overall, while UIW drops to 20-26 overall.

The Lady Buffs jumped to an early, 7-0, lead in the bottom of the first inning. Amber Farr and Kasey Henderson each led off the game by getting hit by pitch by UIW pitcher Amanda Sparks. One out later, Kristina Myles grounded out to third base, driving home Lecomte. The inning continued when Christie Russell was hit by another Sparks pitch. Erin Hartigan then singled to left, scoring Couger. Farr came to bat as the Lady Buffs batted around in the first inning and was again hit by pitch to drive home Brown. Henderson then lined a two-run single to center, scoring Hartigan and Russell to give WT a 7-0 lead.

The game was then called due to the windy conditions and restarted 90 minutes later with WT still at bat in the bottom of the first. Lecomte ended the inning by flying out to right field.
