Midwestern State Hands 7-3 Loss to Lady Buffs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State put five runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-3 win over #25-ranked West Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park in Wichita Falls, Texas. The loss drops WTAMU to 27-15 overall, while MSU immproves to 22-9 overall. The Lady Buffs jumped to an early, 2-0, lead after just one-half inning, as they scored two runs on three hits, all with two out. Kimberly LeComte started things by doubling to left field. Dani Couger followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Lecomte. Designated hitter Meghan Brown reached on an error by Mustang first baseman Jessica Rodriguez to keep the inning alive. Kaitlyn Witte then doubled to left, scoring Couger. Midwestern State scored a single run in the bottom of the third inning. With two out, Sarah Weary singled, stole second, then scored on Maranda Bishops double to left field. WT took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, as Amber Farr singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Kristina Myles, who had reached on a fielders choice. MSU got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Alyson Reynolds singled to score Mallory Mooney. The Mustangs then broke the game open in the fifth, plating five runs on six hits, leaving the bases loaded in the process. “We did a nice job of building an early lead against a very good pitcher,” said WT head coach Kevin Blaskowski. “Give Midwestern State credit for the way they fought back. They are a very good hitting team, and it showed today.”
Marci Womack (5-7) took the loss, going 4.2 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs. Shelbey Cockrell came on in relief in the fifth inning, pitching 1.1 innings of perfect ball, striking out three. Katie Peterson (10-4) went the distance for MSU, scattering nine hits and striking out nine. Offensively, Farr went 2-for-4 with a RBI, Lecomte was also 2-for-4 with a run scored and Witte was 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Lady Buffs next series will be April 3-4 when the travel to Stephenville, Texas to face Tarleton State. First pitch Friday afternoon is set for 2 p.m. CDT. |
