CANYON, Texas - Sophomore catcher Amber Farr went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and swiped three bags on the base paths, but it was not enough to lift the West Texas A&M softball team to a victory on Sunday as the Lady Buffs dropped the rubber game of a three-game Lone Star Conference South Division series to Texas A&M-Kingsville by the score of 3-1.

The loss drops WT's overall record this season to 12-11 and the team's mark in LSC South games to 3-3. The Javelinas, meanwhile, improve their mark on the year to 12-13 and their conference-leading record in league action to 5-1.

The game got off to a rocky start for the Lady Buffs as a WT error put the first Kingsville batter of the day on base. After a stolen base put the running in scoring position with still no outs, senior pitcher Andrea Renteria toughened up to strike out the next two batters and induce a pop up to get out of the inning unscathed.

Renteria (3-4) was tagged with the loss in the contest after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. The Yuma, Ariz., native was 1-1 in the series after picking up the win in Saturday's 9-0 victory over the Javelinas.

WT was unable to get a run over their own in the bottom of the first inning, despite loading the bases against Kingsville starter Courtney Rigamonti, who picked up the win in a complete game effort.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Javelinas were able to break through on the scoreboard with a two-out single by catcher Julia Canales off Renteria in the top of the third.

Head coach Kevin Blaskowski and the Lady Buffs got creative to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. With runners on the corners and two outs, Audrey Wallace attempted to steal second and prompted a throw from the Canales behind the plate which allowed Farr to come home from third on the double steal and tie the game at 1-1.

Texas A&M-Kingsville put the deciding runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to give the game its final 3-1 outcome. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, back-to-back singles chased Renteria from the ball game and she was replaced by freshman Shannon O'Dea.

Canales again came through for the Javelinas, singling to right center off O'Dea to drive in both runners.

The Lady Buffs are back in action this week with a pair of midweek doubleheaders at Lady Buff Yard against Lubbock Christian and Adams State. The action begins on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against the LCU Chaparrals.
