WT Drops Pair on Final Day of the Holiday Inn/Lady Buff Invitational

AMARILLO, Texas - Battling high winds and cool temperatures, The West Texas A&M softball team dropped a pair of games in the gold bracket of the 2008 Holiday Inn/Lady Buff Invitational, falling to Northeastern State, 10-4, before dropping a 4-2 decision to Cameron to conclude play on Saturday at Amarillo's Southeastern Complex Southeastern Oklahoma was the champion of the event, finishing play with perfect 4-0 record, defeating Northeastern State in the championship game of the gold bracket. The Lady Buffs (8-7) are back in action on Sunday when they host Fort Hays State in a doubleheader at Lady Buff Yard in Canyon. First pitch for the FHSU twin bill is set for Noon. Game #1 Recap (Northeastern State 10, West Texas A&M 4) The RiverHawks struck back after the long ball, collecting four hits off WT starter Kaitlyn Witte to plate two runs in the top of the third inning and recapture the lead at 4-3. Northeastern State padded a run onto its lead in the fourth inning and used a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth to chase Witte and take a 7-3 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Buffs came to bat trailing 10-3 after a three-run top inning from NSU. WT was able to load the bases on three walks, allowing Amber Farr to step up with two outs. Farr took advantage of the situation and hit a screaming line drive which tipped of the glove of the third baseman to bring in the fourth Lady Buff run of the day.
Witte, who allowed seven runs in 4.2 innings, was tagged with her first loss of the season and saw her record fall to 3-1 on the year. Game #2 Recap (Cameron 4, West Texas A&M 2) WT fell behind by a score of 1-0 as the Aggies plated a run in the bottom of the first but roared back in the top of the second as junior first baseman Brytany Lemon and junior outfielder Jessica Ruzicki each drove in a run. The lead did not last as Cameron scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to send the Lady Buffs to their seventh defeat of the season. On the base paths, Ruzicki collect a season-high three stolen bases. |
