Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championships Preview

CANYON, Texas - The Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship will take place this Thursday, Friday and Sunday at The Pitch on the campus of West Texas A&M University. The championship is a six-team, single elimination event, with the top two teams receiving first-round byes. WTAMU earned the right to host and the No. 1 seed by winning the regular season LSC title for the second straight year, finishing with a 7-2-1 conference record (13-2-2 overall). Central Oklahoma earned the No. 2 seed with a 7-3 league record (13-6-1 overall). The championship kicks off at 12 p.m. on Thursday with No. 3 Texas Woman's (8-8-1, 6-3-1 LSC) playing No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce (10-8, 5-5 LSC). The next game is at 2:30 p.m. when No. 4 Midwestern State (12-4-2, 6-4 LSC) takes on No. 5 Abilene Christian (10-6-2, 5-3-2 LSC). The TWU/A&M-C winner advances to play UCO at 12 p.m. on Friday, while the MSU/ACU victor plays WTAMU at 2:30 p.m. The Friday winners get a day off before playing on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the LSC Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II tournament. During the 2009 regular season, the Lions defeated the Pioneers 1-0 on September 29th, while the Mustangs were victorious over the Wildcats 3-0 on October 30th. The Bronchos split with their possible semifinal opponents this season, defeating the Lions 1-0 in double overtime on October 30th and losing 2-0 to the Pioneers on November 1st. The Lady Buffs were 1-0-1 against their possible second-round adversaries, defeating the Mustangs 3-1 on October 18th and playing to a scoreless draw with the Wildcats on October 25th. In the 2008 championship, top seed WTAMU won the championship by defeating No. 4 UCO in the semifinal and No. 2 A&M-C in the final. The Bronchos defeated the No. 5 Wildcats before falling to the Lady Buffs, while the Lions defeated the No. 3 Mustangs to reach the final. MSU notched a win against No. 6 Northeastern State before falling to A&M-C.
The LSC has held the women's soccer championship since 1996, with four teams winning the crown. WTAMU has won five titles, including the last two and UCO has four, with their most recent victory in 2006. A&M-C and MSU each have two, as the Lions last won in 2004, while the Mustangs won the first championship in 1996 and won again in 1998.
