WTAMU Hosts St. Mary's In Soccer Twinbill Friday

The West Texas A&M University men's and women's soccer team will host St. Mary's University on Friday, Sept. 9 at Noon & 3 p.m. The Lady Buffs will kickoff at Noon while the men will continue the action after the Lady Buffs and will start at 3 p.m.
The Lady Buffs went 1-1 in their home opening weekend and are now 1-2-1 on the season. The Lady Buffs started off Thursday Sept. 1 with a win over Northwestern Oklahoma, 3-1, in which junior forward Sarit Shenar tallied her second and third goals of the early season. Another goal was added by freshmen midfielder Elisabeth Markussen who tallied her second goal as a Lady Buff. On Sunday the Lady Buffs had a tough loss to New Mexico Highlands. Highlands won the game 2-0 behind some fine goal playing by sophomore goalie McKaila Dorman. The Lady Buffs are looking forward to getting back on the winning track this Friday against the Lady Rattlers of St. Mary's University.
St. Mary's is coming off a tough, 1-0, defeat to Montana State University-Billings last weekend. Despite the loss the Lady Rattlers are 2-1-0 with impressive wins over Adams State and Angelo State. The Lady Rattlers are led by junior forward Kyle Hyslop and sophomore midfielder Deann Lopez who each have tallied two goals on the season.
The Buffs soccer team will follow the Lady Buffs with their home opener against the Rattlers of St. Mary's. The Buffs are coming off an impressive 3-0 win over rival Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday. Senior All-American forward Josh Fender tallied his first goal of the season in the fourth minute of the game. Fender headed the ball in on a free kick from freshmen midfielder Antonio Barrera. Barrera didn't wait long to score his first goal as he put the ball in the net in the 14th minute. The Buffs finished their scoring in the 27 minute of the game on a goal by freshmen Tom Nutter who was assisted by sophomore defender Kenneth Christensen.
The Rattlers of St. Mary's are 0-1-0 on the season after a loss on Sept. 2 to Trinity University, 2-0. St. Mary's was picked to finish sixth in the SSC preseason poll.
The Buffs will wrap up their two game home stand on Sunday Sept. 11 against last season's conference champs, University of Incarnate Word. Game time will begin at 1 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
UIW is 0-2 on the year, and will be at ENMU on Friday before coming to town to face WTAMU.
