UCO Tops Lady Buffs in Shootout to Claim LSC Tournament Championship

CANYON, Texas - The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs gave it all they had but came up two penalty kicks short on Sunday afternoon as the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma claimed their fifth Lone Star Conference Championship in front of 205 fans at The Pitch on the campus of WTAMU, defeating WT in a shootout (4-2 PK's) to grab the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA DII Postseason.

The decision will go down as a tie for both teams since a shootout was necessary to decide a victor, the Lady Buffs moved their overall record to 14-2-3 while UCO is 14-6-3.

UCO took the early lead in the 29th minute as Shayna Kindsvater scored a goal from 12 yards out to give the Bronchos the 1-0 lead.

WT answered in the 78th minute as Becky Hewson (Cambridge, England) put a free-kick from around 25 yards into the Broncho goal to knot the score at 1-1.

The two teams battles through 90 minutes of regulation plus two 10 minute overtime periods before the Bronchos claimed their fifth LSC title, out shooting the Lady Buffs, 4-2, on penalty kicks.

Kayla Sisco (Amarillo, Texas), Nadia James (Morvant, Trinidad & Tobago) and Melissa Carnero (Amarillo, Texas) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts on the pitch.

The Lady Buffs now wait to hear their playoff fate on Monday evening as the NCAA DII Postseason Brackets are announced on a web-broadcast on NCAA.com at 6:00 p.m. CST. WT entered this weekend as the top seed in the South Central Region as well as #7 in the NSCAA national polls, the Lady Buffs are a top-contender to host the South Central Regional Tournament next weekend.
