Lady Buffs Move on to LSC Championship with 1-0 Win
Nov. 6, 2009 CANYON, Texas - The #7 Lady Buffs swept Midwestern State 1-0 in the Lone Star Conference Semi-Finals Friday, November 6, 2009. 175 fans turned up at the Pitch in Canyon, Texas on the 80 degree afternoon for the match. The win boosts the Lady Buff record to 14-2-2 for the season and decreases the Mustang record to 13-5-2. The first half proved to be an defensive struggle as both teams fought to score with no prevail. Midwestern was only able to take one shot for the period while the Lady Buffs totaled six. Tension ran high in the second half as the game grew more physical. Mustang forward Brittany O’Neal (SR, Nacogdoches, Texas) grabbed the first yellow card of the game in the 56th minute for rough play. In the 71st minute, teammate Brandy O’Neal (JR, Rockwall, Texas) also received a yellow card. Immediately following the card, Melissa Carnero (FR, Amarillo, Texas) scored the first and only goal for the Lady Buffs assisted by Samantha Garland (JR, Newark, Texas) with a header from seven yards. Carnero captured her third goal of the season while Garland tallied her third season assist. Kelly Skehan (JR, Klein, Texas) snatched the win in goal for the Lady Buffs with two saves in her 90 minutes of play. Her record in goal moves to 11-2-2 as she tallies 57 saves for the season. The University of Central Oklahoma topped Texas Women’s University 1-0 in the afternoon’s early match, placing them in the finals against the #7 Lady Buffs on Sunday, November 8, 2009.
