Another Second-Half Surge Sparks Lady Buffs To 3-1 Win Over TWU Friday
Oct. 28, 2005
DENTON, Texas -- For the second time in the last three matches, the West Texas A&M University women's soccer team used a three-goal second-half scoring surge to rally for victory, this time a 3-1 win over Texas Woman's University on Friday night at Denton, Texas. The win keeps the Lady Buffs in contention for the Lone Star Conference regular season title entering the final match on Sunday.
WTAMU improves to 7-1 in LSC action, right behind first-place University of Central Oklahoma, who improved to 7-0-1 with a 2-0 win over Midwestern State University on Friday. The Lady Buffs need UCO tie with to Angelo State University on Sunday in order to have a share of the LSC regular season title, or a UCO loss would give WTAMU the crown outright. The Lady Buffs will first need to defeat Texas A&M University-Commerce on Sunday at Noon in order to have any possible shot at the title.
The win was WTAMU's seventh in the last eight matches and nine of last 11, as the Lady Buffs improve to 10-4-1 overall.
TWU has gone winless in the last five matches, losing four and tying one, as the Pioneers evened their record at 8-8-1 overall and slipped to 3-5 in LSC play.
The Pioneers outshot the Lady Buffs, 14-10, in the match, including 10-8 in shots on goal. TWU had an 8-3 shooting advantage in the first half, as Emily Meinen netted her seventh goal of the season a second into the 28th minute for a 1-0 TWU lead.
That score would remain through halftime, until a 1:17 into the second half, senior defender Misti Northcutt successfully converted a penalty kick goal for her second goal of the season to tie the score at 1-all.
At the 56:00 mark, junior forward Whitney McClain took a cross from freshman midfielder Samantha Calcote and shook the net for a 2-1 Lady Buffs lead.
Freshman midfielder Elisabeth Markussen capped the scoring with a goal just two seconds into the 80th minute, collecting the ball after TWU tried to clear off a corner kick.
Sophomore netminder Sarah Anderson recorded eight saves to keep the Pioneers at bay.
After Sunday's regular-season finale, WTAMU will be playing in the LSC Tournament, which begins on Nov. 3 at Edmond, Okla., hosted by UCO.
