Lady Buff Soccer Falls to Midwestern State in Close 3-2 Match
Oct. 26, 2007
CANYON, Texas - Despite a strong scoring push in the second half, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team came up just short of a win, falling to the Midwestern State Mustangs, 3-2, at The Pitch on Friday afternoon. Leading scorer Elisabeth Markussen and sophomore Adi Stein scored for WTAMU as the Lady Buffs finish their regular season with an overall record of 11-6 and a 5-5 Lone Star Conference mark. Midwestern State scored first in the 11th minute when Melissa Brown sent a clearing ball from the Mustangs' defensive end of the field over the Lady Buff defense to Brandy O'Neal in the other half. On the breakaway, O'Neal dribbled the ball to the top of the box and sent her shot over the head of WT goalkeeper Lisha Jungmann to put MSU on the board. Both teams pressured throughout the rest of the half but the score remained 1-0 in favor of MSU at halftime. In the 51st minute, sophomore Jenelle Nedd dribbled the ball down the right side of the field past several Mustang defenders and sent the ball to the far post over MSU keeper Heather Primavera's head. Markussen ran on to the ball and touched it in just inside the post to equalize the match at one goal apiece. MSU fought back and O'Neal converted in the WT box to put the Mustangs back on top in the 73rd minute when Lauren Smith took a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped right to O'Neal's feet. O'Neal scored on the open net from one yard out on the far post to put MSU ahead, 2-1. Six minutes later, MSU's Kendra Clemons capitalized on a served ball in the box that was tipped by a Lady Buff defender as Jungmann came out to get it. The ball was redirected to Clemons on the far post and she scored on the open net from two yards in front of the goal. The Lady Buffs attacked quickly off of the ensuing kick off and Stein converted a second-effort shot from the left side of the box, shooting the ball inside the far post from six yards out to make it 3-2.
WT continued the offensive attack throughout the remaining 11 minutes of the match but could not find the back of the net. The Lone Star Conference Championships begin on Nov. 1 at Tom Thompson Field in Edmond, Okla.; the top six teams in the conference advance to the tournament. WTAMU is currently in fourth place with a 5-5 LSC record while a number of other conference teams still have games to play this weekend. |
