WTAMU Drops 1-0 Decision To UCO In LSC Showdown
Oct. 23, 2005
The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to the University of Central Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at a cold and windy Kimbrough Memorial Stadium, as the Lady Buffs relinquished first-place in the Lone Star Conference to the Bronchos. It was WTAMU's first conference loss of the season, as the Lady Buffs are now 6-1 in LSC action, while UCO improves to 6-0-1. The loss also snaps WTAMU's six-match win streak and five-match unbeaten streak against UCO.
The last time WTAMU had lost to UCO was Nov. 10, 2002 in the LSC Tournament, and the Lady Buffs and Bronchos are now 1-1-1 in their last three meetings, as the two teams tied in last year's regular season meeting and WTAMU beat UCO in the LSC Tournament semifinals.
The Lady Buffs are now 9-4-1 overall, while the Bronchos improve to 12-3-1.
Sunday was the final home match for three Lady Buffs: defender Misti Northcutt, midfielder Roxy Sides, and forward Katie Henley. All three were honored in a pre-match ceremony and played the entire match.
UCO's Joy Hagemann tallied the lone goal of the match, hitting from 25-yards out with a perfectly lined shot over WTAMU sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Anderson in the 71st minute.
WTAMU had a chance to tie it minutes later, as Sides fired a rocket from 18 yards out that UCO netminder Carly Fischer got her hand on before it clanked off the crossbar.
The Lady Buffs had a 14-9 advantage in shots, including 8-6 in shots on goal. Fischer registered eight saves, while Anderson tallied five.
WTAMU also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, but most of them were snuffed out by Fischer and the UCO defense.
The Lady Buffs wrap up regular season action next weekend on the road, heading to Denton, Texas to face Texas Woman's University on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. WTAMU's regular season finale is on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Noon against Texas A&M University-Commerce at Commerce, Texas.
The LSC Tournament begins on Nov. 3 at Edmond, Okla., hosted by Central Oklahoma.
