WEATHERFORD, Okla. - With wet and soggy field conditions, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team rolled over Southwestern Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon, 7-0. Highlighting the scoring in Weatherford, OK were sophomore classmates Elisabeth Markussen (Borkup, Demark) and Samantha Calcote (Amarillo, Texas), as both Lady Buffs completing the game with hat-tricks.
After a halftime lead of 1-0 on a goal by Markussen, WTAMU started their scoring spree five minutes into the second half. Calcote scored two goals at 50:29 and 57:14 to bring the WTAMU lead up to 3-0 before scoring her third goal nearly four minutes later. Calcote's third goal was assisted by senior Sarit Shenar (Rehovot, Israel), and it marks the first time in Calcote's WTAMU career that she has scored a hat-trick.
Shenar was able to get her own goal, her 20th on the season, in the 73rd minute off the foot of Markussen, who scored two late goals to achieve her second hat trick of the season - Markussen had her first three goal match on Aug. 30, 2006, against UT-Permian Basin.
The Lady Buffs took 24 shots on Sunday, with 16 of their shots landing on goal. SWOSU had five shots on goal, and 13 total. Sophomore keeper Sarah Pipkin (San Angelo, Texas) and freshman Lisha Jungmann (San Antonio, Texas) combined for the fifth shutout of the season for WTAMU.
With the win the Lady Buffs improve to 12-2-1 and 4-2-1 in the Lone Star Conference, while SWOSU is 6-7-2 and 2-4-1 in the conference. The Lady Buffs are back in action on Oct. 20 at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium when they host Texas A&M Commerce at 3 p.m.
