Lady Buffs Soccer Victorious Over Abilene Christian

CANYON, Texas - Junior Elisabeth Markussen scored twice and added an assist to propel the Lady Buffs to a 3-1 win over conference opponent Abilene Christian at The Pitch on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Kayla Sisco also scored and had an assist for WTAMU as the women improved to 7-2 overall, 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference. Markussen now leads the Lady Buffs in goals, with nine, and in points, with 21. The Wildcats fell to 6-5 overall, 1-1 in conference play. At 16:37, Sisco scored first in the match, taking a pass from Markussen into the box and firing a shot from right to left from 12 yards out. ACU tied the game in the 26th minute when Jordan Reese scored from right in front of the net. Ashley Simon sent a corner kick to Alyson Thomas who was waiting at the far post. Thomas volleyed the ball back in front of the net and Reese knocked it in past WTAMU goalkeeper Lisha Jungmann. The match remained knotted at one goal apiece until Markussen tallied her first goal in the 69th minute. Sisco sent the ball forward to Markussen, who dribbled to the left side of the box past a Wildcat defender and drilled a shot to the right side of the net. Markussen notched an insurance goal in the 89th minute, putting WTAMU up 3-1. Sophomore Kendal Kitchens took a shot that ACU goalkeeper Allison Egan knocked aside, but Markussen pounced on the rebound and scored into the open net. The Lady Buffs dominated possession in the match, peppering Egan with eight shots on goal. Meanwhile, the WTAMU defense held the Wildcats to just three shots on goal as Jungmann made two saves in the match. WTAMU's next match is Sunday at 3:30 p.m. against conference opponent Angelo State, the second match of a West Texas A&M soccer double header at The Pitch. The men's squad faces St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
