Lady Buffs Soccer Improves to 4-1 with Win over St. Mary's

CANYON, Texas - Junior striker Elisabeth Markussen scored two goals just three and a half minutes apart in the first half to lead West Texas A&M to a 2-0 win over the visiting St. Mary's Rattlers. Sophomore Adi Stein tallied an assist on Markussen's second goal as the Lady Buffs improve to 4-1 on the season. In the 16th minute, St. Mary's goalkeeper Jamie Talley kicked a goal kick directly to Markussen. She dribbled to the center of the field just outside the box and drilled a shot to the right upper 90 from 20 yards out. In the 19th minute, Stein sent a perfect through-ball that split the St. Mary's defense and Markussen lobbed a shot over Talley's head from just inside the box. The goals were Markussen's second and third of the season. WTAMU dominated possession throughout the game, taking 12 shots in the first half and 11 in the second. Kendal Kitchens directed two of her three shots on goal with her head but both were saved by Talley. Jenelle Nedd and Markussen took two shots on goal apiece while Megan Szydloski, Kirsten Wallace and Danea Fontana each had one shot on goal for the Lady Buffs. St. Mary's had a few opportunities to score, but sophomore goalkeeper Lisha Jungmann shut them down each time. She make six saves in 90:00 minutes of play. The Lady Buff defense helped Jungmann preserve the shutout despite a nine shot onslaught in the second half (as compared to St. Mary's three shots in the first half). The game got physical in the second half; St. Mary's committed 15 fouls and two players and an assistant coach received yellow cards. One Lady Buff also received a yellow card amidst nine team fouls.
For the Rattlers, Marcey Morales and Elizabeth Hoffman each took two shots on goal while Carolina Hernandez and Christina Mercedes took one apiece. Talley finished with nine saves and two goals against in 90:00 minutes of play. The Lady Buffs' next action is a home match-up against Texas Wesleyan on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. |
