WT Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight
Aug. 31, 2007 WEATHERFORD, Okla. - The Lady Buffs tallied their third consecutive win on Friday afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the season as they beat the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves, 2-0. Danea Fontana scored in the first half, assisted by Samantha Calcote and Elisabeth Markussen, followed by a second half score from Miriam Dominguez, also assisted by Markussen. The game was played at Southwestern Oklahoma as part of a four-team meeting between SWOSU, West Texas A&M, Colorado State-Pueblo and 2006 MIAA Champion Washburn University. WT dominated the match from the opening whistle, limiting Colorado State-Pueblo to just two shots the entire game. Lisha Jungmann started in goal and played all 90 minutes, stopping the Thunderwolves' one shot on goal. Fontana notched her goal at 26:43 into the game; Calcote crossed the ball from the left side of the net and Markussen tipped it past CSU-P goalkeeper Chrissy Mandarich to Fontana, who found the back of the net from one yard out. With 17:13 left in the game, Markussen split the Thunderwolves defense on a beautiful through-ball to Dominguez, who broke free and challenged Mandarich one-on-one from the right side. Dominguez drove the ball to the lower left corner past the diving Mandarich to round out the Lady Buffs scoring. WT out-shot CSU-P,26-2, with seven shots landing on goal. Kendal Kitchens took eight shots (two on goal), Fontana took five (one on goal) and Dominguez took four (two on goal). Calcote and Markussen tallied three shots apiece. The Lady Buffs also took 13 corner kicks - 12 in the second half - and didn't give up any to the Thunderwolves.
For CSU-P, Mandarich made four saves and allowed two goals. Robin Hayes and Jeanna Barnes tallied their squad's two shots. The Lady Buffs return to SWOSU on Sunday to face Washburn at 12 p.m. |
