FINDLAY, Ohio - The West Texas A&M women's golf team finds itself in 10th place at the end of the first round of competition, Wednesday, at the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships, being held at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.

The Lady Buffs shot a first-round score of 329 on the par-72, 6,219-yard Findlay CC course. WT stands 28 strokes behind team leader Tarleton State (301) and eight strokes behind ninth-place Upper Iowa (321).

Lady Buffs' Hammerli Sriyai (freshman, Bangkok, Thailand) and Mollie Peterson (junior, Texico, N.M.) are tied for 40th, individually. Each shot rounds of 81, to finish nine strokes back of individual leaders Carla Cooper (Tarleton State) and Charlene Reid (Pfeiffer).

Other scorers for the Lady Buffs, in addition to Sriyai and Peterson, are Sara Coe (freshman, Amarillo, Texas), who finished in a tie for 47th after carding a score of 82, while teammate Lacy Torbert (senior, Hereford, Texas) is in a tie for 62nd after shooting an 85 and Whitney Osborne (junior, Amarillo, Texas) lies in 71st position after carding a first round score of 91.

"We simply dug a big hole for us on the first hole of the tournament," said WT head coach Meredith Jameson. "We averaged a double-bogey after that first hole, and when you start off with a score like that and you have 17 holes left to play, it really works on you, mentally.

"Once we got to the back nine, we started to play the way we are capable of playing," Jameson continued. "It's a challenging course, but it's a national championship course. We're just having to get used to playing on very soft fairways. The girls aren't used to their balls making a divot when they land a tee shot."
