May 5, 2009
OMAHA, Neb. - The West Texas A&M women's golf team lies in third place after the second round of competition at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha, Neb. The Lady Buffs shot a second-round score of 325, to go with the 324 recorded on Monday over the par-72, 6,053-yard course at Ironwood Golf and Country Club. WT is two strokes back of second-place Western Washington (324-323-647) one stroke ahead of fourth-place Cal State-Chico (327-323=650). Tarleton State leads the team scoring, with rounds of 318-324=642. Pacing the Lady Buffs for a second day is Hammerli Sriyai (freshman, Bangkok, Thailand), who is in fourth place, eleven shots over par after shooting scores of 78-77=155. She was followed by Mollie Peterson (junior, Texico, N.M.), who is tied for 20th after carding two-round scores of 80-85=165, while Lacy Torbert (senior, Hereford, Texas) finished in a tie for 26th after carding rounds of 85-81=166. Teammate Whitney Osborne (junior, Amarillo, Texas) is tied for 29th with two-round scores of 85-82=167 and Sara Coe (freshman, Amarillo, Texas) is tied for 42nd after carding scores of 81-92=173 over the first two rounds. "The team has really come together for this tourney," said WT head coach Meredith Jameson. The girls are really playing with a lot of heart. One player particularly proud of is Lacy Torbert. She is really playing strong. She had a tremendous approach shot, after hitting her drive into the sand, on a par-3 late in the round that really saved our day."
"We have put ourselves in a position where, if we play the way we are capable of playing, we can qualify for nationals."
Angelo State's Raelyn Smith (73-78=151) and Tarleton State's Carla Cooper (74-77=151) are tied atop the leaderboard after two rounds. The West Regional concludes Wednesday, with the top three teams and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team advancing to the NCAA Division II Championship. |
