OMAHA, Neb. - The West Texas A&M women's golf team is in a three-way tie for second place after the first day of competition at the NCAA West Regional, in Omaha, Neb. The Lady Buffs shot a first-round score of 324 over the par 72, 6,053-yard course at Ironwood Golf and Country Club. WT is tied with Western Washington and Cal State-Monterey Bay, each just six strokes shy of team leader Tarleton State (318). Leading the Lady Buffs is Hammerli Sriyai (freshman, Bangkok, Thailand), who is six over, having shot a 78 and tie for sixth place. She is followed by Mollie Peterson (junior, Texico, N.M.), who is tied for 16th after carding an 80, while Sara Coe (freshman, Amarillo, Texas) is tied for 18th after shooting a first-day 81. Lacy Torbert (senior, Hereford, Texas) finished in a tie for 32nd after carding a round of 85. She is tied with teammate Whitney Osborne (junior, Amarillo, Texas), who also shot an 85 over the first round of play. Angelo State's Raelyn Smith tops the first-day leaderboard, having shot a one-over 73. Tarleton State's Carla Cooper is one stroke back at 74. "Our girls played really well today," said WT head coach Meredith Jameson. "This is a very, very tough golf course with very small greens. It is just extremely challenging and, as a result, the scores are high. We just need to stay mentally strong tomorrow." The West Regional continues Tuesday, with the top three teams advancing to the NCAA Division II Championship.
