CANYON, Texas - The Lone Star Conference South Division title is within grasp of the No. 9 West Texas A&M women's basketball this week, as the Lady Buffs welcome Angelo State to the First United Bank Center on Wednesday. WTAMU is looking to claim its second consecutive division title. The Lady Buffs moved four games up on second place Tarleton State, after defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville 78-51 last Thursday and Texas Woman's 89-72 on Saturday. Leading the way for the Lady Buffs was sophomore Emily Brister, who was named LSC South Player of the Week after averaging 28.5 points per game. In Thursday's win over Kingsville, the WTAMU defense held the Javelinas to just 39 percent shooting from the field and 18 percent from outside. The Lady Buffs forced Kingsville in to 33 turnovers, the second most this season by a WTAMU opponent. The win over the Javelinas also marked the fifth consecutive year WTAMU has won 20 games. Against Texas Woman's on Saturday, the Lady Buffs held the Pioneers to 28 percent shooting from downtown on 6-of-21 shooting. The WTAMU offense was just as solid as the defense, as the Lady Buffs were 30-of-62 from the field, 8-of-15 from 3-point range and 21-of-33 from the free throw line. With the victory over TWU, WTAMU has won 30 straight games at the FUBC, eight in a row overall and 15 consecutive over the Pioneers. Against this weeks opponents, WTAMU has won four in a row over Angelo State, with the Rambelles last win coming on Feb. 10, 2005, 59-43. The Lady Buffs have won seven in row over Abilene Chrisitan. The Wildcats last win over WTAMU was on Feb. 22, 2003, 79-71. The Rambelles have split their last eight games, with three wins coming in their last five contests. ASU lost its last two on the road at Midwestern State (53-51) and Tarleton (54-52). Kandra Lakey averages 13.6 points per game to lead the Rambelles. Similar to Angelo, Abilene has gone 4-4 in its last eight games, with a win coming over Tarleton on Saturday. The Wildcats fell to Tarleton 75-66 and Midwestern State 66-50 to begin the month of February. Alex Guiton leads the Wildcats in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game. The Lady Buffs will play at Tarleton on Feb. 21 before returning back to the friendly confines of the FUBC on Feb. 24, to host Midwestern State for `Senior Day'.
