Lady Buffs Face Tough Road Challenges This Weekend

CANYON, Texas - After a pair of 20 point wins last week over Tarleton State and Midwestern State, the No. 10 West Texas A&M women's basketball team will play two pivotal Lone Star Conference South Division games Thursday at Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Woman's on Saturday. Tip-off against the Javelinas will be at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. versus the Pioneers. Last week, WTAMU defeated Tarleton State, 78-58 in Canyon to move its home winning streak to 28 straight games. The Lady Buffs then traveled to Midwestern State last Saturday, where they beat the Mustangs, 81-61. Leading the way for WTAMU was sophomore Emily Brister, who averaged 22.5 points and senior Natalie Wheeler, who chipped in with 18 points per game. Defensively, the Lady Buffs were led by senior Kara Pridey, who pulled down six rebounds per game. Thursday's opponent, Texas A&M-Kingsville, has won three in a row, defeating Midwestern State, Angelo State and Abilene Christian. With the three wins Kingsville has put itself in a tie for second with a 3-2 LSC South Division record. Lana Toki leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game. WTAMU has won five in a row over Kingsville, with the Javelinas last win coming on March 1, 2003, in the regular season finale. Texas Woman's started 2-0 in the LSC South, but since then the Pioneers have lost three out of their last four in the division. TWU has dropped its last two games, to Abilene and Angelo State. Margaret Wimbish leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.7 points per game. The Lady Buffs have won 13 in row over Texas Woman's, with the Pioneers last win on Dec. 30, 1999, defeating WTAMU, 63-59. On Feb. 8, the Lady Buffs will return to the First United Bank Center to play Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m. before hosting Texas Woman's on Feb. 10. WTAMU will look to move its home winning streak to 30 games with wins over both squads.
