Lady Buffs Use Depth To Wallop Bronchos Saturday

EDMOND, Okla. - The West Texas A&M University women's basketball team had every player in uniform score as the Lady Buffs walloped the Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma, 81-55, Saturday in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at Edmond, Okla.
Senior guard Carlee Howard tied a game-high with 17 points on 5-8 shooting from behind the 3-point arc to lead the Lady Buffs. Junior forward Tywanda Harris netted 13 points, all in the second half and junior forward Celeste Stevenson posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jennifer Brock dished out a game-high six assists for WTAMU, which won its fourth-straight and improved to 5-1 overall.
UCO was led by Jackee Brown with 17 points, while Kari Edge and Lindsey Smith added 10 points apiece, as the Bronchos lost their fourth-consecutive game, falling to 2-4.
In a rematch of a first-round LSC Tournament game from last season, won by WTAMU, the Lady Buffs opened a 16-9 lead on a lay-up from Stevenson with 12:30 to play in the first half, before the Bronchos charged back to pull to 19-17 on a lay-up by Smith with 9:21 left.
WTAMU then went on an 11-1 run, capped with a trey by Howard to put the Lady Buffs up 30-18 at the 6:06 mark, and WTAMU took a 37-29 halftime lead.
The Lady Buffs opened the second half on a 20-7 streak which ended with nine-straight points from Harris, to give WTAMU a 57-36 lead with 10:32 remaining in the game.
The lead reached 26 points at the 8:07 mark on a lay-up by Harris to make the score 65-39, and stretched to its biggest point of the game at 77-50 with 2:49 left in the game on a pair of free throws by freshman guard Natalie Wheeler, and the Lady Buffs coasted to victory.
WTAMU shot 50.9 percent from the field (33-65), including 9-22 (40.9 percent) from 3-point land.
UCO shot a chilly 32.1 percent from the floor (18-56), including 5-22 (22.7 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.
The Lady Buffs dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Bronchos, 45-29.
WTAMU has a week off before returning to action on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when the Lady Buffs travel to Portales, N.M. to take on Eastern New Mexico University in the opening of LSC South action. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Central Time.
