Head coach Bob Schneider won his 1,000th all-time victory in the 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M University women's basketball team's 59-47 triumph over Cameron University Saturday night in a Lone Star Conference crossover contest at the WTAMU Event Center.

Schneider, in his 24th year at WTAMU and 42nd overall in coaching both high school and college, is now 1,000-281 (.781).

Senior forward Celeste Stevenson netted a game-high 18 points, while fellow senior forward Vasha Adams tallied 12 points to lead the Lady Buffs to their third consecutive victory, improving to 4-1 on the year. WTAMU also improved to 23-2 all-time vs. Cameron.

CU, which dropped its second in row and slipped to 1-5, was led by 14 points from Katie Stoll, while Melissa Steen posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Christina Buben also tallied 10 points. Brittany Cooksey, who was the Lady Aggies' leading scorer coming in to Saturday's game, was held scoreless before fouling out.

WTAMU shot a season-low 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field, including 5-17 (29.4 percent) from behind the 3-point arc. The Lady Buffs were 10-17 (58.8 percent) from the free throw line.

CU shot a paltry 12.0 percent (3.25) from the field in the first half, and finished the game 15-54 (27.8 percent), including 5-15 (33.3 percent) from 3-point land. The Lady Aggies shot 12-16 (75.0 percent) from the charity stripe.

WTAMU had a 45-35 rebounding advantage, and forced 20 CU turnovers, which the Lady Buffs converted into 22 points. The Lady Aggies generated WTAMU's 19 turnovers into 11 points.

The Lady Buff defense held CU scoreless for the first 5:27 of the game. WTAMU opened up a 26-13 lead with 2:30 left in the half following a 3-pointer from senior guard Suni Jo Petty.

 

 

Petty had a steal and a jumper at the first half buzzer to send the Lady Buffs into the locker room with a 29-15 lead.

WTAMU opened the second half with an 8-2 run, capped by junior forward Keisha Monroe with 16:52 to play to put the Lady Buffs ahead, 37-17.

Monroe later hit one of two free throws with 10:07 to go, giving WTAMU its largest lead of the game at 48-26.

CU couln't cut the gap under 15 points until Stoll hit a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left for the final score.

The Lady Buffs have a nine day lay off until traveling to Stephenville, Texas on Dec. 13 to take on Tarleton State University. TSU is 2-4 on the year after dropping a 49-33 decision to LSC South favorite, Angelo State University Saturday night at San Angelo, Texas. TSU will first face Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday, Dec. 11 before taking on WTAMU.
