Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Lady Buffs to Win over SW Oklahoma State

CANYON, Texas - Behind an impressive team defensive effort, the No. 11 West Texas A&M women's basketball team ran its winnings streak at the First United Bank Center to 23 straight games on Saturday night as the Lady Buffs handily defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State, 68-36, in Lone Star Conference crossover action. The 36 points allowed is the lowest point total allowed by a West Texas A&M women's basketball team since Dec. 9, 1999, when the Lady Buffs defeated American University of Puerto Rico, 134-21. The opening moments of the first half went back and fourth as both teams tried to get a feel for one another with the game seeing five ties and three lead changes. Later with the game knotted a 12-12 at the 11:27 mark of the opening period, the Lady Buffs were finally able to wrestle to momentum in their favor, using an 11-0 run to outscore SWOSU the rest of the half by the score of 22-7 to carry a 38-19 advantage into the intermission. Sophomore guard Courtney Lee helped to spearhead the WTAMU charge on the offensive end in the first half, contributing 12 of her 17 points on the night. Classmate Emily Brister was also productive, helping the Lady Buffs put points on the board. Aided primarily by her perfect 8-of-8 mark from the free throw line, the Amarillo High product contributed a team-high 13 points in the half. Following halftime, the Lady Buff defense dominated the early going of the second half, not allowing a SWOSU field goal until the 6:42 mark as WT outscored the Lady Bulldogs 34-17 in the period to seal its seventh win of the season. Brister was the again the story on the offensive end, scoring 10 early points to finish with a game-high 23. Senior guard Jennifer Brock spearheaded the Lady Buff defensive effort, posting five steals on the night as WTAMU collected 16 as a team.
With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to7-1. Southwestern Oklahoma State, meanwhile, falls to 2-5 on the year. West Texas A&M is back in action on Dec. 7 as both the women's and men's teams take to the road to battle Texas A&M-Commerce in a LCS Crossover doubleheader. |
