Lady Buffs Improve to 6-1 with a 78-58 Victory over Cameron

CANYON, Texas - A stifling Lady Buff defense forced 27 turnovers and sophomore guard Emily Brister led an impressive team offensive effort with 27 points as the No. 11 West Texas A&M women's basketball team defeated Lone Star Conference crossover opponent Cameron by a score of 78-58 on Thursday night at the First United Bank Center. With the victory, WTAMU improves its record to 6-1 on the season, while Cameron remains winless on the year at 0-6. The win also gives the Lady Buffs their 22nd consecutive win on their home court. Sparked by good ball control and 16 first half points by Brister, the Lady Buffs jumped out to a 43-30 halftime advantage. Brister, was 4-fo-8 from the floor during the first half, connecting on a trio of three point shots and converting 5-of-6 attempts from the foul line. Cameron shot 50 percent (12-of-24) during the first half but was pressured into ball handling mistakes by the WTAMU pressure defense, committing 13 turnovers during the opening period. During the frame, WTAMU was also accurate from the floor, connecting on 16-of-36 points for a 45.7 team shooting percentage. Local product Kalee Carey was productive in limited minutes during the first half of play to help the Lady Buffs take the impressive lead to the locker room. The Canyon, Texas, native was 4-of-5 on field goals attempts in the first half, converting on several nice post moves on the low block to finish the period as WTAMU's second leading scorer with eight points in only five minutes of play. During the second half, the Aggies were pesky chipping away at the Lady Buff lead, getting the home advantage down to only six points at one point in the period, but in the end WTAMU was just too much. Senior Natalie Wheeler paced the team in the second half with 13 points, many of which came from behind the three point line where she was 3-of-4. The Turkey, Texas, native finished with 18 points in the contests, to join Brister and sophomore post Mariah Willis, who contributed 11 points, as the only Lady Buffs in double figures in the scoring department.
For the game senior point guard Jennifer Brock did a good job of ball distribution, passing out nine assists, a season-high for the Abernathy, Texas, native. The Lady Buffs are back in action on Saturday as they kick off a Lone Star Conference crossover doubleheader with a 6 p.m. contest hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State. |
