The 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M University Lady Buff basketball team rode the shoulders of four players in double-figures to a 79-48 rout over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in WTAMU's home opener Saturday afternoon at the WTAMU Event Center.

WTAMU improves to 2-1 on the young season, while UCCS, playing against its first Division II opponent after opening with an exhibition and a game against Division I foes, drops to 0-2.

Senior forwards Celeste Stevenson and Vasha Adams each netted a game-high 14 points, while senior guard Suni Jo Petty and junior guard Sassy Pyburn tallied 13 points apiece.

The Lady Buffs found themselves down, 6-5, early before going on two different 13-0 streaks to open up a 32-8 lead at the 8:58 mark on a jumper from Petty and never looked back.

WTAMU took a 45-26 lead into the halftime break, as the Lady Buffs shot 57.6 percent (19-33) from the field. Both teams committed 17 first half turnovers, but the Lady Buffs took advantage of them better, scoring 21 points of turnovers, compared to only 14 for UCCS.

The Mountain Lions shot just 34.6 percent (9-26) from the field in the first half, being pestered by the scrappy WTAMU defense.

The Lady Buffs cranked up the defensive pressure even more in the second half, limiting UCCS to 16.7 percent (5-30) after halftime to finish 14-56 (25.0 percent) for the game. The WTAMU defense forced 34 UCCS turnovers, turning them into 37 points, while the Mountain Lions netted 19 points off the 31 Lady Buff miscues.

WTAMU finished the game shooting 29-57 (50.9 percent), including 6-12 (.500) from 3-point land and 15-24 (62.5 percent) from the free throw line.

 

 

The Lady Buffs had a 43-37 rebounding advantage as well, and notched 23 assists, led by six from Pyburn.

UCCS was led by 10 points and nine rebounds from Emily Jenkins, while Jennine Sauter added nine points to go with nine rebounds and Julie Richards tallie eight points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots.

Freshman guard Dixie Bell gave the Lady Buffs their largest lead of the game and the final scoring margin with a pair of free throws with 36 seconds remaining.

The Lady Buffs remain home to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, Dec. 2 and Cameron University on Saturday, Dec. 4, Both Lone Star Conference games tip off at 6 p.m. at the WTAMU Event Center.
