Lady Buffs Lose a Heartbreaker To Emporia State Saturday

EMPORIA, Kansas - The West Texas A&M University women's basketball team fought till the end but came up one point shy of victory as they were defeated by Emporia State 58-57. The Lady Buffs entered this game fresh off last nigts victory in game one of the Candlewood Sweets Classic, but couldn't make it two in a row.
In a tight scoring game, the Lady Buffs and Lady Hornets traded baskets all night and it came down to the final two minutes to decide who would come out on top. WTAMU was down by one point going into the last two minutes, but couldn't find the basket to over take the lead. In fact, neither team drained any shots in that time, and the score reamined 58-57.
In a final desperate attempt to gain the lead, WTAMU coach Bob Schneider, called a timeout with 13 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the Lady Buffs couldn't convert on the ensuing play erasing any hope of a WTAMU comeback.
Lady Buffs were led by game-high scorer junior forward Celeste Stevenson with 16 points. Two other Lady Buffs joined her in double digits as junior forward Tywanda Harris recorded 13 and junior post Vasha Adams had 10. The Lady Hornets were led by Janel McNeal as she scored 13 points.>br>
The Lady Buffs faught hard the entire game coming back from a 10 point deficit midway through the second half to force a competitive finish. WTAMU came close to ending the Lady Hornets home winning streak as they have only been beaten eight time in the last seven years in the William L. White Auditorium.
Following the game, the All-Tournament team was announced and two Lady Buffs players were honored. Stevenson and Suni Jo Petty were named to the team with their weekend performance of 56 combined points. The Tournament MVP was Emporia State's McNeal.
