17th-Ranked Lady Buffs Overcome Slow Start, Pull Away To Cage Wildcats, 82-67
Feb. 14, 2006
Senior forward Keisha Monroe recorded her sixth career double-double, netting a career-high 25 points to go with a game-high 12 rebounds in leading the 17th-ranked West Texas A&M University Lady Buff basketball team to an 82-67 come-from-behind win over Abilene Christian University Tuesday night in Lone Star Conference South Division action at the First United Bank Center.
WTAMU is now 11-0 at home and on a 15-game home winning streak. Tuesday was WTAMU's sixth-straight win over ACU, and the Lady Buffs now lead the all-time series, 36-13.
The Lady Buffs improve to 21-3 overall and 10-1 in LSC South action, remaining atop the division standings. The Wildcats lost for the fourth time in the last five games, in falling to 10-14 overall and 4-7 in LSC South play, as the division preseason favorites are in jeopardy of failing to make the LSC Tournament, as ACU is in fifth-place.
WTAMU takes a half-game lead on Angelo State University atop the division standings. ASU is at Eastern New Mexico University on Wednesday. The Lady Buffs head to San Angelo, Texas on Saturday to tangle with ASU in an LSC South clash.
Monroe, who was playing in just her third game back from a knee injury after missing the previous eight games, nearly had her double-double in the first half with 18 points and nine rebounds. Monroe was one of three Lady Buffs in double-figure scoring, as freshman guard Emily Brister tallied 23 points to go with three steals, while junior guard/forward Natalie Wheeler tallied 14 points
Junior forward Alicia Saunders snared 11 rebounds, swatted four shots and swiped three steals.
Junior guard Jennifer Brock dished out double-digit assists for the second game, doling out 10 dimes.
Brister was 4-of-5 from 3-point land, while Wheeler netted 3-of-5, as WTAMU was 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) behind the arc. The Lady Buffs were 29-of-56 (51.8 percent) from the field, but struggled a bit at the free throw line, hitting just 16-of-28 (57.1 percent).
ACU was 22-of-62 (35.5 percent) from the field, hitting 9-of-25 (36.0 percent) behind the 3-point arc and 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) at the charity stripe.
The Wildcats were led by Ashley King, who hit five 3-pointers, and ended the game with 23 points.
WTAMU opened the game in a funk, as ACU opened a 15-5 lead. Monroe then sparked a 23-3 run, netting 14 points in the run, and Wheeler capped it with a 3-pointer for a 28-18 lead with 2:24 left in the half.
ACU trimmed the margin to 30-25 with 49 seconds to go on a 3-pointer from Ashlee Barr before Wheeler and Brock hit back-to-back treys, as Brock drained a 3 from the right wing with three seconds left, and WTAMU took a 36-27 lead into the halftime lockerroom.
The Wildcats cut the gap to 56-52 at the 11:22 mark after two technical free throws by Alex Guiton, part of her 10 point, eight assist and three steal effort on the night.
That would be the closest ACU would get after WTAMU pulled away with an 18-4 tear, in which Brister tallied nine points and two steals, to take a 74-56 lead with 5:23 left on the clock to put the game away for the Lady Buffs.
WTAMU will head to San Angelo, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 18 to tangle with Angelo State at 6 p.m.
