KINGSVILLE, Texas -- It was a 19 for No. 19 achievement Saturday, as the 19th-ranked West Texas A&M University Lady Buff basketball team reached the 20-win plateau for the 19th time under head coach Bob Schneider, as the Lady Buffs improved to 20-3 on the season and 9-1 in Lone Star Conference South Division action with an 80-62 win over Texas A&M University-Kingsville Saturday afternoon at TAMU-K's Kleberg Bank Court at Kingsville, Texas. It was WTAMU's fourth-straight 20-win season, as they have reached the milestone for the 19th time in Schneider's 25 years guiding the Lady Buffs.

The win also kept WTAMU in a tie atop the LSC South standings, which became a two-way tie after Angelo State University won 63-56 over Tarleton State University, who was part of the tie for first, Saturday night at San Angelo, Texas.

It was also WTAMU's sixth-straight win over TAMU-K, as the Lady Buffs now hold a 37-7 all-time series advantage. WTAMU emerged victorious from Kingsville for the third-straight time after losing in the previous five trips.

Five players registered in double-digits, four in points and one in assists, as junior guard Jennifer Brock distributed a career-high 14 assists, which is the sixth-high single-game assists mark in school history.

Freshman guard Emily Brister tallied a game-high 23 points, to go with a game-high five assists, plus eight rebounds. Junior forward Alicia Saunders was a rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, as well as swatting six blocks.

Freshman forward Mariah Willis netted 15 points, which tied her career-high that she just set last Thursday.

Senior forward Keisha Monroe posted 12 points and five rebounds, in just her second game back from a knee injury Jan. 12.

 

 

TAMU-K was led by Angela Trotter's double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jasmine June and Kaipresha Price tallied 13 points apiece.

The Lady Buffs blistered the nets to the tune of 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the second half and ended the night 33-of-61 (.541) from the field. WTAMU was 11-of-16 (.688) at the free throw line.

The Javelinas were 23-of-74 (.311) including just 1-of-11 (.091) from behind the 3-point arc, and were 15-of-18 (.833) at the charity stripe.

WTAMU had a 56-34 domination in points in the paint and the Lady Buffs' bench posted a 32-19 advantage over their Javelina counterparts.

The Lady Buffs led from start-to-finish, opening the game with a 10-0 streak, and jumping out to an 18-4 lead at the 12:58 mark on a Monroe layup. TAMU-K closed to 32-27 with 5:44 left in the half after a layup by June, and WTAMU took a 39-33 halftime lead.

The second half opened with an 18-6 Lady Buff run, capped by a layup from Saunders for a 57-39 lead and WTAMU pulled away. Saunders ended a 7-0 Lady Buff run with a layup for a 68-48 lead with 6:51 remaining.

WTAMU hosts one of its final two regular-season home games on Tuesday, Feb. 14, taking on Abilene Christian University in an LSC South clash at 6 p.m.

ACU is 10-13 overall, 4-6 in LSC South play after topping Midwestern State University, 62-52, Saturday night.
