Lady Buffs Outrebound Eastern New Mexico En Route To 87-47 Victory

Portales, N.M. – West Texas A&M hit the boards against Eastern New Mexico en route to a 87-47 win in Lone Star Conference South Division action Saturday evening at Greyhound Arena. The win lifts WTAMU to 19-3 overall, 7-0 LSC South, while ENMU falls to 9-16, 0-7 in LSC South action. The victory also keeps the Lady Buffs atop the LSC South Division standings. The Lady Buffs started the scoring in the first half with a 12-1 while the Zias started the game with five turnovers in the first five minutes of play. WT continued solid scoring throughout the half, leading by as many as 21 points. A three-pointer and a layup by Emily Brister (senior, guard, Amarillo, Texas) in the Lady Buffs’ last two possessions of the first half gave WT a commanding 40-19 lead at the half. Leading in scoring for the Zias in the first half was Cat Clay (sophomore, guard, Deming, N.M.) with six points. Tori Northcutt (sophomore, guard, Clovis, N.M.) led Eastern New Mexico in rebounds with four defensive boards. Although she struggled early to find her mark, Emily Brister led the Lady Buffs in scoring in the first half with 14 points and also tallied six rebounds. Courtney Lee (senior, guard, Arlington, Texas) knocked down a couple of threes and ended the half with eight points. Brister and Joni Unruh (sophomore, guard, Amarillo, Texas) both led the team in rebounds at the half with six. Northcutt started the scoring in the second half with a Zia layup. Jamie Dreiling (senior, forward, Lake Kiowa, Texas) knocked down two free throws for the Lady Buffs to begin the scoring for WT. A three by Lee gave the Lady Buffs their largest lead of the game with 31 points. The Lady Buffs’ defense in the second half held the Zias to only 12 points in the first ten minutes of the half, with five points coming from the free throw line.
Brister finished the night with a team leading 23 points, followed by Dreiling with 20, and Lee with 17. Unruh led all rebounders with 10 boards and also tallied nine points, one shy of a double-double. Eastern’s Karen Grant (freshman, guard, Lubbock, Texas) was the Zias only double-digit scorer with 11 points. WT shot 48.4 percent from the field and 43.8% percent from three-point range. The Lady Buffs outrebounded Eastern New Mexico 51-28. The Lady Buffs remain on the road this week, as they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, on Wednesday, Feb. 11 to face Midwestern State. Tip-off at D.L. Ligon Coliseum is set for 6 p.m. CST. |
