Defense Propels Lady Buffs Over Texas Woman's Saturday

DENTON, Texas - Another solid defensive performance by the No. 10 West Texas A&M women's team led to a 62-51 victory over Texas Woman's on Saturday in Lone Star Conference South Division play at the McGee Arena. In the first half WTAMU shot its way to 35-20 halftime lead, connecting on 12-of-23 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free throw line. Individually for the Lady Buffs in the first stanza, sophomore Emily Brister led the way with 16 points. The defense for WTAMU also stepped up in the first period, as it held TWU to 6-of-24 from the field and 0-for-5 from outside. Midway through the first half the Lady Buffs were able to pull away from the Pioneers, as WTAMU went on a 14-2 run. During the run, the Lady Buffs forced TWU into six turnovers. In the second period, a pesky Pioneer squad got the Lady Buff lead down to nine with 8:03 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get, as WTAMU went on an 8-1 run late in the half to secure the win. For the game, WTAMU held TWU to 25 percent from the field on 13-of-51 shooting and 1-for-11 from downtown. The Lady Buffs meanwhile, were 19-of-52 from the field and 24-of-29 from the free throw line. WTAMU also forced 27 turnovers and picked up 13 steals. Individually for the Lady Buffs, Brister scored a game-high 31 points, while senior Alicia Saunders and sophomore Mariah Willis each chipped in with six points. It is the second time this season Brister scored over 30 points, the first time coming against UC, San Diego on Dec. 30. With the win, WTAMU improves to 19-3 overall and 8-0 in the LSC South, while TWU falls to 10-11 and 4-4 in the conference. The Lady Buffs will be back in action on Thursday against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m. in the First United Bank Center.
