18th-ranked Lady Buffs' Win Streak Snapped Saturday With 55-50 Loss To Tarleton State
Jan. 28, 2006
STEPHENVILLE, Texas --- The 18th-ranked West Texas A&M University Lady Buff basketball team's five-game win streak came to an end with a 55-50 loss to Tarleton State University Saturday evening at TSU's Wisdom Gym in a Lone Star Conference South Division showdown, as TSU now takes over sole possession of the division lead. WTAMU is now 15-3 overall and 4-1 in LSC South, while TSU improves to 6-0 in LSC South play and 14-5 overall. It was WTAMU's second loss in a row at Stephenville, but the Lady Buffs still hold a 17-4 series lead.
WTAMU was held to only 5-of-19 (.263) in the second half, and finished the night 12-of-44 (.273) including just 2-of-16 (.125) from behind the 3-point arc. The Lady Buffs were 24-of-33 (.727) from the free throw line, with 14-of-20 (.700) in the second half.
Statistically, WTAMU established season-lows for field goal percentage (.273), points (50), field goals made (12), field goal attempts (44), 3-point FG percentage when making a 3-pointer (.125 - WTAMU was 0-of-7 vs. Washburn on Dec. 20), and assists (7).
Freshman guard Emily Brister led WTAMU with a game-high 21 points, while junior guard Natalie Wheeler tossed in 10 points. Junior forward Alicia Saunders snagged 12 rebounds and had five blocks, but was in foul trouble for the entire second half.
TSU had three players post double-digits, including two with double-doubles with rebounds. Iveta Griffin led the TexAnns with 16 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while Isha Brown also had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, as TSU outrebounded WTAMU, 46-41.
Katie Crawford added 10 points for the TexAnns, hitting two 3-pointers, as TSU was 6-of-16 (.375) from behind the arc. From the field, TSU was 19-of-63 (.302) and just 11-of-20 (.550) at the free throw line.
After TSU took an 11-9 lead with 11:21 left in the half, Brister had a backcourt steal and layup to spark a 7-0 run and capped the streak with a pair of free throws to put the Lady Buffs on top at 16-11 with 7:38 remaining.
Griffin stopped the run with a basket, Brister then hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc at the 7:00 mark to give WTAMU its largest lead of the half at 19-13, and the Lady Buffs took a 26-21 lead into halftime.
Finding themselves down at the half for the first time in their last seven games, the TexAnns came shooting out of the gate, taking a 29-28 lead on a bucket by Brown. Kendal Reddell hit a pair of deep 3-pointers sandwiched around a free throw from WTAMU's junior guard Jennifer Brock, to put TSU ahead 37-33 with 14:03 to play.
The Lady Buffs scored their next five points from the free throw line, including one from freshman forward Kylee Aleman, for her first point in a WTAMU uniform. Aleman was recently added to the roster due to the Lady Buffs' injury issues.
Aleman's free throw knotted the score at 38-all with 12:49 left, but that would be the closest WTAMU would get, as TSU pulled away with a 3-pointer from D'Anna Dingler for a 51-46 lead with 6:16 to play and the Lady Buffs couldn't trim the deficit to less than three points from there on out.
WTAMU returns home to the friendly confines of the First United Bank Center on Thursday, Feb. 2, hosting Texas Woman's University at 6 p.m. in an LSC South contest.
