Jan. 27, 2005
KINGSVILLE, Texas --- The West Texas A&M University Lady Buff basketball team set a season-high for points for the second game in a row, as they trampled Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 94-55, Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference South division tilt at TAMU-K's Steinke Center.
The Lady Buffs won for the sixth time in seven contests, improving to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in LSC South action, while the Javelinas lost for the third game in a row and nine of the last 10, dropping to 4-14 overall and 0-5 in LSC South.
WTAMU had five players in double-digits, led by 16 points apiece from senior forwards Celeste Stevenson and Vasha Adams, while junior forward Keisha Monroe netted 15 points, two off her career-high. Senior guard Suni Jo Petty talled 14 points, while junior guard Tiffany Lewis registered 13 points.
Stevenson pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and 12th of her career. WTAMU outrebounded TAMU-K, 38-35.
The Lady Buffs dominated the points in the paint category, 44-16, and the WTAMU defense forced 30 TAMU-K, which the Lady Buffs converted into 42 points, while the Javelinas had 13 points off WTAMU's 21 miscues.
WTAMU shot over 50 percent for the second-straight game, netting 53.0 percent (35-of-66), including 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from 3-point land, as Petty and Lewis drained three apiece.
TAMU-K was a paltry 30.8 percent (16-of-52) field goal percentage, including 4-of-16 (25.0 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.
The Lady Buffs won in their second-straight visit to Kingsville, after losing in the previous five contests on the Javelinas' home court. WTAMU now holds a controlling, 34-7 all-time lead in the season series.
The Lady Buffs mirrored Monday's blasting of Eastern New Mexico University in which they jumped out to a 51-19 halftime lead. Thursday, WTAMU scored the first seven points of the game, including five from Monroe, in the first 2:45. After a free throw by TAMU-K's Nahogeny Brown, Petty and Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers and WTAMU had its first double-digit lead of the night at 13-1 with 15:55 to play.
Petty later hit another trey to put the Lady Buffs up, 18-3, before the Javelinas trimmed the gap to 22-12 on consecutive 3-pointers by Octavia Hobbs.
A 13-0 Lady Buff run made sure that the difference didn't dip below 10, as Adams started the streak with a layup at 11:55 and capped it with another layup at the 8:30 mark to open a 35-12 lead.
TAMU-K trimmed the deficit to 41-25 with 4:29 left in the half on a 7-0 run, but Petty broke the streak with a steal and layup, followed by another fast-break layup and a jumper from the top of the key by Lewis.
The Lady Buffs took a 51-28 lead into intermission after a 3-pointer from the right wing by Lewis with 3.5 seconds left.
WTAMU opened the second half with five unanswered points to extend the lead to 30 at 58-28 on a layup from Stevenson at the 18:25 mark.
TAMU-K closed the gap to 73-53, but WTAMU reeled off a 12-1 streak, which included three buckets from Adams, and a four-point play from Petty, who was fouled after hitting a 3-pointer, to make it an 85-54 contest.
After a free throw by Hoodye, the Lady Buffs hit the final nine points to coast to the victory, as a layup from sophomore forward Alicia Saunders with 23 seconds left tallied the final score for WTAMU's largest margin of the night.
The Lady Buffs head to Denton, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 29, to take on Texas Woman's University, who is 9-8 overall and 2-3 in LSC South play, after losing to Eastern New Mexico University, 62-57, Thursday night.
WTAMU returns home on Thurs., Feb. 3, hosting traditional rival Angelo State University, in an LSC South doubleheader with the men's team at 6 and 8 p.m.
