SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelles were coming off of a huge win against Abilene Christian, but the #9-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs took their momentum, defeating ASU 63-53. The win lifts the Lady Buffs to 20-3 overall and 4-1 in the LSC, while Angelo State falls to 9-10 overall and 2-3 in conference play.  

The first half saw the Lady Buffs with a 13-point lead at 36-23. Angelo fought tough, battling back in the second half.

With more than six minutes to play in the second half, the Rambelles had cut the Lady Buffs’ lead to three points, 48-45. Simmons and Unruh both hit jumpers for a six point lead, but Angelo responded with a three pointer and a jumper on back-to-back possessions to make the score 53-52. Holly Isaacs kept the lead alive, hitting a trey to bring the score to 56-52 with 2:25 left to play.

After an empty trip for Angelo, Simmons scored another bucket for a six-point lead with two minutes left to play. ASU started fouling to stop the clock, sending Isaacs to the line twice for three bonus free throws at 61-52 with 45 second left to play. Simmons also put away two free throws late in the game to seal the win for the Lady Buffs, 63-53.  


 

 

Unruh led all scorers with 18 points and also led the Lady Buffs in rebounds with eight. Simmons followed with 12 points and Isaacs and McLain each contributed 10 points. Also adding points for WT were Aly Sherman with six, Ceciley Johnson with five, and Ashley Leven with two.

The Lady Buffs kept their turnovers down, giving the ball up only 15 times to the Rambelles 20 turnovers. Of those turnovers, 13 came from WT steals led by Unruh with a career high of nine steals. The Lady Buffs outrebounded ASU by only two boards, 39-37.

WT shot 43.4 percent from the field for the game while Angelo shot only 33.3 percent. WT scored 34 points in the paint to Angelo’s 18 points,  and had eight second chance points to ASU’s seven. There were three ties and three lead changes, all early in the first half.

The Lady Buffs get a well-deserved break in conference play with an open date on Saturday. They continue LSC action on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, traveling to Portales, NM, facing Eastern New Mexico. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT, with the men’s game immediately following.
