Lady Buffs Remain Undefeated in LSC South Play with Improbable Comeback Win
SAN ANGELO, Texas Senior point guard Jennifer Brock sank a pair of clutch free throws with just five seconds to play, putting an exclamation mark on one of the most memorable comeback victories in West Texas A&M woman's basketball history on Wednesday night as the No. 16 Lady Buffs defeated Angelo State, 72-71, at ASU's Junell Center.
WTAMU, which trailed for much of the second half, including a double-digit deficit at the 2:40 mark of the second half, improves its overall record this season to 14-3 and its mark in Lone Star Conference South Division affairs to a perfect 3-0. Angelo State, meanwhile, falls to 9-6 on the year, including a 1-2 record in LSC South action. Early in the contest, the Rambelles emerged with a lot of intensity, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage primarily caused by their edge on the boards, particularly several key offensive rebounds. Sophomore Courtney Lee led the Lady Buff charge back from the early deficit, scoring six early points. Brister continued the charge both defensively and offensively, scoring an uncontested lay-up at the 8:08 mark giving the Lady Buffs their first lead at 14-13. The sophomore from Amarillo stepped up her game during the last 10 minutes of the opening period scoring 10 points, while Lee continued her torrid pace with 12 of her team-leading 19 points on the night during the first period, converting 6-of-8 shot attempts. For the night, Brister finished with 16 points, while senior forward Alicia Saunders enjoyed her best game of the season, tallying 11 points and seven rebounds in 11 minutes of action. For the period, WTAMU shot 48 percent (13-of-27) from the field, but took a slim 32-31 advantage into the intermission despite being out rebounded by ASU 23-16. The `Belles were very active on the boards during the opening stanza, collecting 13 offensive rebounds as a team to make up for only a 32 percent (10-of-31) team shooting percentage. To start the second half, it was the Lady Buffs who came of the locker room on a roll, outscoring the `Belles 6-0 to begin the period while building a 38-31 lead. The streak would not last for long, however, as ASU responded and took control of the game for much of the second half, culminating in a 14-point lead, 64-50, at the 6:32 mark. The `Belles' efforts were aided greatly by guard Britinee Davis, who contributed 18 of her team-leading 19 points during the second half, shooting 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc. From there the pesky Lady Buffs began to chip away at the lead, but the `Belles were still able to claim a 10-point advantage with only 2:40 remaining in the contest. From that point WTAMU began its incredible comeback as Brock was able to connect on a three-point field goal, a rare feat for the Lady Buffs in the contest as they connected on only two of nine attempts from long distance in the contest. Joining Brock with key free throws down the stretch were Lee and Natalie Wheeler, as WTAMU was perfect on its final eight charity stripe attempts in the contest. The Lady Buffs return to action this Saturday at the First United Bank Center as they host LSC South foe Abilene Christian in a 6 p.m. contest.
